Driveshaft boots.

Before I go and order one, has anyone tried the universal split driveshaft boots that you dismantle nothing, cut old boot off, slip boot on and glue it together. They are not much more than normal ones but should be easier fitted. Anything that saves me work nowadays is a good thing.

guessing its inner shaft? from what i've read you need to clean clean clean for them to stick

I've fitted two so far, it's certainly easier than the conventional type. The first was for my nephew who shortly after got rid of the car but the second I fitted to a 106 earlier this year and is still holding well.

In thinking that. And I only need to look at a spanner and everything goes black and oily! I would guess that a 205 driveshaft won't be the most difficult thing to remove to put on a proper one.
It is the inner one.

Is it an overlapping join Mike, or do you try to glue it with a bot join?

For the price its worth a try then. If it were the outer i'd be tempted to strip it back and try and stretch one over, but the inners are always a pig. If it fails it cant be too much to pull the shaft

It's sort of like tongue and groove. Glue the narrow end around the shaft and tie-wrap it in place, then glue the rest of the seam, pack in the grease then tie-wrap the wide end.

The first one I bought had standard super glue - I knew the pitfall there straight away! But the one I bought this year had a slower-setting, vulcanising type glue which requires more patience but less likely to fiercely stick you to the gaiter.

Slower vulcanising type glue will be a vast improvement.

I've recently used industrial adhesive called PU18 to repair a pair of shoes.
It's a polyurethane paste which cures into a flexible rubbery substance quite similar to driveshaft gaiters.
If you don't mind it taking a few hours to go off, I should think it would be ideal to stick them.

Well I think I'm going to get one of these to try it. It's not a lot of money if it doesn't work. I've just asked a garage to do the wheel bearing on the other side. It's sods law they aren't on the same side!

I didn't realise they were still available otherwise I would probably have given it a go, I've done this job on the 2CV & it was fiddly 0 but the Haines manual for the C15 makes the job look well nigh impossible. (anyway I'm picking up a drive shaft tomorrow, not least because the old MoT's suggest this boot's been split for years - so the joint must be suspect, but any way changing the whole shaft seems an easier option).

I remember a similar fix for Beetles years ago, where the boot was closed with 1/2-doz nuts'n'bolts!

I have found superglue to be at it's best used on rubber: fixed split track rod end boots & the like with it, but this PU18 stuff sounds like good stuff - where d'you get it?

Mine came from eBay, but it's widely available - I gather it's used to fix and seal all sorts of fabricated assemblies.
I recon it could even be used to repair an existing boot, at least temporarily.

So split boot it is then. It will get done some dry afternoon soon.
