Hello all

Post by np »

Hi everybody.Very long time no see.For those that remember,i had a 1997 Xantia VSX td estate,then in 2006 brought my dads 406 hdi company car.http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =4&t=20173" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Well,all these years later,i still have said 406.Now with 213k miles,original dmf and clutch,fuel pumps and injectors.Been pretty much bullit proof,untill last week.Now i suspect i have a failed piston ring.SOo i shall be posting in the forums to see if anyone has a diesel compression test kit,local to me in Bristol,UK.

Hi and welcome

A good mileage that. My 406 is just coming up to 240k and also has original DMF and clutch - wonderful cars. My engine is still in good nick though, uses no oil and will still do 60mpg. I would think that yours possibly has not had enough oil changes.

Just to recapp.I got the 406 in sept 2006 with 56k miles on it.Had it remapped the same week to 140bhp/220 lbft.Both my dad before me and me tow our caravans with it.At easter it pulled our 1300kgs caravan up Telegraph hill in devon flat out in 3rd gear holding 40 mph all the way up.For those that dont know the hill,thats good going with a caravan !!!! with the original dmf and clutch.I dont exactly have a light right foot,so with the remap,towing and my right foot,213k is not bad.
Peter N.I`ve have always serviced it at 12k miles,or within 500 miles of the service indicator.Mostly fully syn 5/40 oil,filter,fuel and air filters,and anything else thats needed doing.I`ve rebuilt the rear calipers,renewed all suspension parts and bushes,cv joints,ANYTHING that needed doing lol.
The original parts are,both fuel pumps and 4 injectors,1 wheel bearing,1 abs sensor,dmf and clutch,cooling rad,intercooler,and turbo.Everything else,a/c condensor,engine sensors,air flow meter etc has been replaced or rebuilt.
Thing is,if i get a different engine,factor in a new flywheel and clutch,cambelt kit and service,i`m looking at £600.The car is in very good condition inside and out.But who`s to say that i do do all that,and in a few months the fuel pump or injectors pack up??The cars worth maybe £500-£1000 maybe???
Still,will keep you all posted when i do a compression test. :)

I know Telegraph hill well! Sounds as though you car has had a hard life so the mileage is not bad. I change my oil at 8k, I think most recommended oil change intervals are far to long now. I have never known an injector fail on a 2.0. 8 valve which is why you can buy them for peanuts on ebay - there's always a first time though.

I have had one go on each of my C5s. Had them tested and refurbished, all seem to be fine now.

Not sure of the first one - around 140,000. Current one about 180,000

What sort of mileage did you have the problem at? My 406 has done 240k and as far as I know never had a problem.
