Activa - Igntion Module and Ignition Capacitor

Unread post by wurlycorner »

My Activa is running on 2 cylinders.
I've changed the coil, but it's not that :evil:

Consulting the wiring diagram;
Image

1105 is the Ignition Module
1135 is the Ignition Coil
1136 is the Ignition Coil Capacitor

They're the only things that can be at fault as far as I can see (aside from the ECU of course).
(1304 is the fuel injection relay which is also part of the circuit, but that must be working otherwise it wouldn't be running on even 2 cylinders).

1135 has been changed and the old one has actually all belled out ok anyway (although the HT side of the coil is much higher resistance at 13k Ohm, than the replacement is, at 7k Ohm).
I can't actually see how 1136 could cause it to run on 2 cylinders (if the capacitor had gone dead short it would just drag down the whole ignition/injection circuit, if it had gone open circuit or changed capacitance it would just mean there was noise on the circuit which would result in rough running or such-like).
So I'm assuming it must really be 1105 (or the ECU), or the wiring/connections at those.

My next steps then, are to bell out the individual wires and to check the terminals are ok.

I'm assuming this is the Ignition Module (1105);

Can anyone confirm that's correct?

Also, does anyone know where the Ignition Coil Capacitor (1136) is?

Thanks

An odd problem...

You need one of those lights to see if all four pots are getting sparks and to see if all four injectors are getting likewise. Or you can just lay the plugs on the head to see if all spark..

The system is 'wasted spark' so the plugs should fire twice as often as expected...

Yes, that's the ignition amplifier...

If yours is an S1, I have a spare ECU with a known keypad code you can try...

The capacitor, which is only a suppressor, hides near the coil and is bolted to the head...

Thanks Jim, good to know that's the module.

This is picking up from my previous post in the profile thread. It's definitely 2 and 3 not getting a spark, but the injectors are still firing ok.

I'll get on with belling out from the module tonight then (assuming it isn't raining).
Thanks for the offer of the ecu and key pad, here's hoping it isn't that...

It is worth disconnecting the battery for a while to reset the engine ECU, I had a V6 that lost 2 cylinders after a jump-start, it even looked OK on a Lexia, but battery reset fixed it.

Ta - it actually gets that quite regularly though... (the Activa spends most of its life without a battery at the moment, 'cause I keep borrowing it to move others in my stash around :lol: )
