Dear Citroen drivers,
I have just bought my first citroen after owning a peugoet diesel for years, it is smooth, strong feeling & roomy.
I think I may have bought a lemon, as it has started smoking under acceleration , (only after the test drive was over)
I bought it from a 2nd hand dealer with 105000 miles on the clock & virtually FSH. it is a 1996 model with no signs of a towbar ever have being fitted.
When I make the engine do some work it tends to billow blue'black smoke at below 1500 revs, it clears at about 2200 revs & doesn't smoke at all at idle or over 2400 revs.
Typically if i put my foot down after a roundabout or away from traffic lights i can make following cars 'disappear'
Do you think a bottle of 'no smoke' was used to hide a worn turbo or piston rings?
I also have minor problems with: Sunroof not resealing after useage
Central locking sometimes not working on the boot
Seemingly high furl consumption, considering this is supposed to be the same peugoet engine that I am used to?
Any thoughts or advice please

First thing to check is the air filter.
Second check / adjust the fuelling on the bosch (?) pump, do a forum search for loads on this.
Third - watch your driving style - no full accelerator from stop, build the pedal effort gradually.
A TD hatch can get anywhere from 38 - 50mpg depending on how it's driven. I would expect your heavier estate to range from 35-45mpg.

I have taken the car into citroen dealer & had full service with air filter & lhm etc, no signs of the car ever having had a twbar & it doesn't drive like a worn ca, I admit I do occasionally corner and stay in Third when I would select second in a petrol car, but having driven a lot of other diesels which seemed to 'like' to do work around 1500 revs, i am suprised by the lazy feeling of the car until the turbo picks up with the revs, it is not what i would expect. I asked the citroen garage to check whether the rear brakes were dragging, but the found no problem,
thanks for your help.

Ok, but two words alarm me here.. "Citroen Dealer".
I beg you again "Check the air filter".
It's not unknown for these to be ahem... "Overlooked".
Also, put a bit of rag over the exhaust for a few seconds, and see what colour it comes out, and have a careful sniff for oily smells.
Is it using oil ?
Also, check the air pipe that comes over the top of the engine from the back, and into the intercooler, there will be a little oil smeared in the pipe, if it's a lot, you may be looking at a turbo problem ( ie. leaking oil into the inlet, being burned ). SOME OIL SMEARING is normal.

Before i had my boosted,it was very sluggish below 2k rpm. Then,it would start to pull about 1800 rpm, with a big shove when it got to 2k rpm.Since i`ve had it boosted it pulls very well from about 1400rpm.
I get an average of about 40 mpg from mine. From a mixture of driving. When towing our caravan it drops to about 28 mpg.
My boot lock started to stick a while ago.I would lock the car with the remote, but the boot wouldn`t always lock.I would have to do it a coulple of times to get it tp lock,& the handle would stick.I just sprayed a load of wd40 in around the handle & lock,& that seemed to cure it.

I'll second what Neil says, the TD estate is very sluggish under 2k revs. I boosted my car myself: adjusted the pump settings and have increased the average mpg and made the car so much better to drive. There is loads of info on boosting here, use the search at the top of the page. You don't have to go mad to get a much more flexible drive. Diesels do like clean air and fuel filters and at about £4 each, I think this is a good place to start.
