c5 gearbox

hi all.i have a 2003 c5 110 bhp.over the last few weeks it has been harder to
get it in to first gear than it usually was.seems to sort itself out after a bit then,
but today it seem to last alot longer.all other gears are fine.any diagnosis or
even cure would be greatly appreciated.thanks

When was the box oil last changed ?

what box is it, auto or stir-stick

PS, if you put you car type in your sig then the basics do not need to be asked

Assuming its a manual box it sounds like the wrong oil grade and lower temperatures. Drain the oil and refine with GL4 75W-80.

thanks guys.ya,its the manual gearbox.there is 203k on the clock and the oil was last changed
at about 120k.its only in the last 1000miles ive had the problem.everything was fine with
it this morning,so im lost as to what to do.A friend of mine said to put in ATFfluid in to the
box,is this ok to do or will it do harm?

NEVER listen to a "friend" when it comes to oil choice....USE the Manufacturers recommended or kill it.
others will post exactly what to use for your specific box.

I would prefer to use the recommended GL4 75-80 oil. However many of the gearbox reconditioners recommend ATF. Manual gearboxes often come back with a label recommending ATF. Some outfits will not give a warranty if any other oil or fluid is used. I don't know the reason but if I fit a rebuilt box I would like to have a warranty. I never got a PSA box done, however I have seen this instruction on Ford, Opel, Renault and Fiat boxes.

thanks bx.sounds ok to do that so.wil the lighter fluidmake it easier to
get in to gear in the mornin or wil it make any difference.how much
oil does the gearbox take?

I've managed to dig up for the 6-speed manual box the following (from the service documentation):

Oil amount:
2,6 l (min)
2,9 l (max)
Oil properties : ESSO 75W80 EZL 848 or TOTAL 75W80W H6959.

No such luck for the 5-speed so far.

It's probably an ML5 - takes about 2 litres.
