Well I spotted a nice J-Reg p5b today no doubt in hibernation for the winter, tucked away in a double garage.

I think it was a saloon, nice enough in its own right, but the coupe for me has an imposing look. So todays nice pair are these blasts from the past

I remember someone who swore by, and not at his Landcrab.

This was like a Maxi only bigger, and came with a 1.8 B series engine or a E series 2.2 transverse straight six.

Apparently in Australia they modified a Landcrab front, and extended it to accommodate a Rover 3.5 litre V8 mounted north south.

In Australia they used the E series in the Marina in a stroked version of the 2.2 which then became 2.6 litres, imagine how that would have handled!

The details in the link below state how rigid the bodyshell of the Australian Landcrab was with good handling, the opposite of the Marina.

Note I did get to drive a Marina 1800TC at one point previously, and also cornered hard when the journey allowed, and then thought hmmm, O.K. this car does not handle.

So after that I thought the marketing department were having a laugh by promoting this as a sporty model with its very MINOR suspension!

Well, a nice trio strictly speaking seen cruising around the Durham dales on George Gently tonight.

The Corsair has false plates on it, DVLA think its a Ford Zephyr V6!
and the Wolseley should really be WHITE, (1964 WOLSELEY 6/110 SALOON)
The blue Rover 2000 Saloon is spot-on though.

I like those a lot 8-)

Why the inconsistencies in the registrations then Neil?

Well, the forensic TV viewer of cars in TV series and films would have thought even without looking it up that the "OO" element of the reg plate was not quite right.

Hilariously, "OO" is an Essex registration (think about it-combine it with a P or a L) out of place in the Durham Constabulary. Should have been a "UP" or a "PT" for accuracy, unless of course Police combined contracts and central purchasing had emerged in the 1960's, and the "Force" got all its cars from a dealer in Dagenham.

The Corsair in question probably should have these plates on it. HX is Middlesex, and as far as I recall from the 60's it would be unlikely that Gently's sidekick being a Durham lad would have bought a Corsair on-line from down South in those days.

I like George Gently.....keeps me interested just spotting the locations. Can't wait for Esh Winning chip shop to feature!

That makes a lot of sense Neil... I suppose false plates in a TV show are a must to stop the owners of the cars being bothered by adoring fans all the time...

The Corsair is still quite a looker - one of the better looking Dagenham Dustbins of the period and arguably the one that still looks freshest today..

My mum bought a white Morris Minor traveller brand new in 1963 the year I got married, £600 including undersealing, reg 5695 KO. I saw it some years after she parted with it having been restored, not seen it since though.

I have never seen a diesel marina van either although I know the engine well as I used one in a Morris Oxford Estate. 40 bhp and if my memory serves me correctly the starter produced more torque than the engine.

I used several Perkins 4/108 engines in subsequent diesel conversions with a heady 52 bhp!
