Fuel price index

Post by RichardW »

We often hear complaints that fuel prices rise quickly on oil price but fall slowly - and then much muttering about no data.... So, thought I would start tracking a fuel price index to see. I've taken the price of std UL and diesel at the local station I use (which is amongst the cheapest), stripped out the tax, then worked out an 'index' based on the raw fuel cost divided by the oil price (corrected to sterling), multiplied by 100 to get a sensible number. The actual number is somewhat irrelevant - this is to look at the trend - a high number means fuel is (relatively) expensive vs crude, and vice-versa. You will note that crude prices have fallen 12% in Nov, but fuel price has moved zip (well, there was a 1p drop in UL in week 2!). I will update on a weekly basis till I get bored  will need to graph it eventually to see the relative movements of retail price and crude price. BTW, tax rate is currently 275% UL and 289% diesel

Edit 19/08/15: Much vaunted drops in diesel price recently, so thought I would update. You will see substantial rise in both price and index of UL (that no-one is talking about) whilst the diesel price (much talked about!) is back to where it was in Jan, but the index has risen a bit so it is 'relatively' expensive!

Edit 26/01/16: Crude price well down, so I thought I'd see where we are at. Index of both now higher than it's been since I started calculating, so it could be relatively cheaper. Tax rates currently nudging towards 400%

Edit 01/05/18: Update after a long break; fuel currently very cheap - see my post at the end!

Here's the data. Crude in £ / barrel, UL £/l / index, Diesel £/l / index
01/05/18 Crude: 54.22, UL 1.239 / 0.835, Diesel 1.269 / 0.881
26/01/16 Crude: 20.94, UL 1.019 / 1.285, Diesel 0.999 / 1.206
19/08/15 Crude: 31.15, UL 1.159 / 1.239, Diesel 1.129 / 1.158
23/01/15 Crude: 32.02, UL 1.059 / 0.945, Diesel 1.129 / 1.127
16/01/15 Crude: 31.70, UL 1.059 / 0.954, Diesel 1.129 / 1.138
09/01/15 Crude: 33.72, UL 1.079 / 0.946, Diesel 1.149 / 1.119
02/01/15 Crude: 36.39, UL 1.119 / 0.968, Diesel 1.169 / 1.083
19/12/14 Crude: 38.14, UL 1.149 / 0.990, Diesel 1.189 / 1.077
12/12/14 Crude: 40.33, UL 1.189 / 1.019, Diesel 1.229 / 1.101
05/12/14 Crude: 44.16, UL 1.199 / 0.949, Diesel 1.239 / 1.025
28/11/14 Crude: 46.21, UL 1.219 / 0.943, Diesel 1.259 / 1.015 (Note oil price sudden drop 6/11 due to OPEC announcement)
21/11/14 Crude: 50.70, UL 1.219 / 0.860, Diesel 1.259 / 0.897
14/11/14 Crude: 49.14, UL 1.129 / 0.887, Diesel 1.259 / 0.955
7/11/14 Crude: 52.32, UL 1.229 / 0.849, Diesel 1.259 / 0.897

Crude price now <$50. Index has risen >20% since early Nov - fuel is 'relatively' expensive! Tax rate currently 350% petrol, 312% diesel :rofl2:

I was living overseas when the UK converted from gallons to litres. I was in Cyprus and they were still using gallons at the time. The first time I filled up on my return to the UK I thought the pump was faulty and I told the cashier of my concern...

She looked at me baffled. I felt a bit of a twit too...
