The simple way is to look at the prongs. If they are just pins then they are 12V, while if the pins are thicker, and end in a slightly wider disc they would be 240V.

12V

240V

these bulbs are the same design as car cap less bulbs but with two straight prong protruding, progs only as in your first link

thanks James they are just straight prongs and i know they are 11.5 or 12v, its the type refference im interested in to correctly identify the LED's required,

these bulbs are in a ceiling light fitting, there is a different type in the wall light's as they have another type of bulb holder/fitting, but i do not have any of those bulbs to check as we got these light fitting from Hastings freegle ( freecycle )

Can you post photo's Malcolm. I have been replacing lots of lights with LEDs and may be able to help.

What I think you need is G4 bulbs, which would be these

Just did a pile of those for my daughter.
Nearly all her lights on the stairs, dining room and sitting room were out, got them from HK, £8 for half a dozen.
Also replaced all her spotlight in her kitchen with G9s, about the same price.
The halogen bulbs were lasting around a month, the LED replacements cost as much for six as two halogens, they have lasted a lot longer and hopefully will continue to do so and they give a far better light, brighter but not as harsh as halogen, and at 16W instead of 200.

They don't warm the kitchen up though

I had my first CFL fail last week. A couple of years ago I replaced every tungsten bulb in the house and that one was the very first failure.

I r's in the bathroom under a glass globe so it may have run a bit too hot or suffered from too-frequent on-off cycles, something they apparently don't like much.

Still, two years out of a cheap IKEA CFL is not bad. The funny thing was that the Tesco replacement was dead out of the box so another IKEA one has been used...

The Ikea ones are among the best - cheap Chinese crap though they are.
They last ages and are quick to ignite.

I have a Philips one here that I paid £22 for about 15 years ago. Still works but is rubbish compared to the recent ones and weighs a ton.

Kitted out a new build with dimmable LED downlights recently. Cheap enough when you buy a houseful. Philips/Domus Deco 13W warm white, tiltable. Each has its own tranny with about 18-20" of lead between trans and light, so you need to allow for suitable space around the transformer units.

The Chinese LED household lamps are very variable. I've found the 'corncob' type very short-lived, but both the small globes and the replacements for halogen floods perfectly reliable.
I've also recently fitted a couple of good-quality CFLs recently, which I've had 'in stock' for a few years, and both have started taking a while to strike after only a few hours' use. Coincidence, or do they perhaps have a shelf life?

That's a good point. The one I found DOA had certainly been in stock a few years but then so had the replacement IKEA one which was fine...

I suppose I ought to test all my spares stock and see if any others have quietly died...
