HDI engine running-on

Post by charentejohn »

After many other problems, sensors reporting low fuel pressure I have has a case of occasional 'running on' and have the good old engine warning light back on again. Xantia 2.0HDI 90.
However, I have searched around and this could now be high fuel pressure, or so it thinks.
Any ideas of what to check to fix this ? The Garage I use is closed at the moment so I will check a few connections in the menatime till they open again.
If only they could say 'found it 200 and it's fixed for sure' I would gladly pay it, as it is I have lost faith in the car and unless they are sure I think it is time to swap.

I do know how to fix it for sure, I am going to look at a C3 1.4 petrol next week. Unless the garage convinces me.

Fuel Pressure Regulator unit in the END of the fuel pump on the engine, facing the fuel filter, has a plug in the end pointing downwards, held in place by two T30 Torx screws.

Replace with another....

Yep, that's what caused it on mine. You will probably find it cures your fuel pressure problems as well.

Sadly I just replaced it, with a non branded one I must admit but a real one was hideously expensive here. 100 euros as opposed to 360+tax.
I wonder how many more I will need to buy before it is fixed ? I would have hoped it would work for more than 80 miles.

I have used secondhand ones but the problem is that the filters get blocked, that's the stainless steel looking tube on the end. Some don't have a filter so I removed mine as they are virtually impossible to clean and its been fine since, you can just grind the end of the tube off, making sure you get rid of any swarf - but of course it may be something else, but not that I have met.

If you see metal filings sticking out of the filter your lift pump is failing.

I was thinking that myself, so it must be a good idea.
I will go off on monday and see if I can find a used one, on the basis that it was probably working. I can do this myself so no need for the garage, used parts here can be expensive based on a new one could be 360+ but I will give it a try. If I buy one I will just remove the end anyway as I am past caring so may as well save refitting it.
I just want it saleable then I will look for a C3 senso petrol, I can work with petrol engines. The HDI is an excellent engine but not if it screws up.

I would have a quick look at daviemac2006 blog. He had a sensodrive Citroen, and it cost him a lot to get the gearbox sorted. He got shot of it pretty quickly after that, and won't get another.

I actually agree with HellR on this one, AVOID A SENSO DRIVE! Theres a lot on UK Ebay with buggered gearbox's, they havent prooved very reliable.

you be far better seeking out a Full Auto with tip ronic, rather then a Senso drive.

Don't buy a sensodrive. When they are working properly they are ok out of town but in town are slow and jerky, that's when they work which a lot of them don't then Mr citroen charges an arm a leg a back and a head to fix it. Look for a full auto c3 which I think means a 1.6 sx.

Getting back to the original issue of run on and fuel pressure don't forget the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, give the contacts a good clean as it's quite exposed to the elements positioned on the front of the engine and can cause the problem of run on as described.

Thanks, I will give it a try as both are new parts so should be ok.
I have done a separate thread for sensodrive as I actually like them http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=50079" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edied to add that just (as Arkwright would say) jiggled the connection a bit and hey presto the light goes out. Could just be because it is cold I guess, should have started it before jiggling it, but at least shows the sensor could be ok, temp or dirt is the problem ?
My problem is mistrust, as this seems to persist I spend my time waiting for it to mess up again so no fun driving, in fact I avoid using the car generally, just in case. If it keeps going I can at least take my time looking for a C3, there is a 1.4 16V xtr about an hour's drive away but didn't want a glass roof really.

I quite liked the sensodrive until I bought one. It had 93000 miles on it and serviced every 10k at citroen specialist which is twice as often as citroen recommend and still broke. Look at the c2 owners club and find out about the sensodrive cars and how unreliable they are. At the end of the day it's up to you, i'm just relating what I found out after mine broke.

I wouldn't have an auto of any sort, it would cost more to repair than my cars are worth.

The DMFs and clutches are original in mine at 231k and 200k Paul, I think it depends a lot on the way they are driven. At least I could do the DMF myself if necessary but I know nothing about auto boxes.
