Relay 2.0 HDI sluggish

Post by viz »

Hi, my 2003 2.0 HDI citroen relay has become very sluggish today. It has had a slightly loud whistling coming from the turbo for a few weeks but no loss of performance. Left work today and it is very sluggish, needing to be in the right gear and revved rather than being lazy and struggling get up to 70. It sounds like there's a mechanical rattling/pinking when under load although the turbo can still be heard whistling. As its dark i cant see if its smoking under load but it is'nt whilst sat on the drive, also can't get it to make the rattling noise whilst stationary. Any ideas ?

Hi John, thanks for the tip. Do you think it likely it would be making the rattling if its the MAF ?

There are forum members with Lexia equipment that (probably) can help narrow down what the fault is. Try looking on this list for those nearest to you;

No power and rattling noise was what we got from our C4 (1.6 HDi) when the turbo failed....

I have been looking at turbo's from breakers and they don't seem too expensive. Are they easy to access on this vehicle, its still dark so not had a look yet ? Is there any way of testing whether this is the fault without visiting the garage as i don't get a chance to visit them without taking a day off work.

It's down the back of the engine, so changing it is not likely to be easy - subframe out perhaps? I'd need the VIN to confirm, but it appears to be a Relay specific turbo. That's not to say of course that one of another car couldn't be rebuilt to fit with the housing off yours. If it is away it might be possible to get a core, and rebuild it relatively cheaply. You'd need to get it on a Lexia to see what the turbo boost is, but just listening to the engine to see the source of the rattle will give you a good hint.

Quick update, i had a look at it when i got to work friday and found the hose from the airbox to maf was off so re-atached this and it no longer sounds as rattly. The performance has also been restored although i am sure its not as brisk as before but that may just be me.
I now think there may be an intermittent fault as it occasionally feels flat but not all the time.

Again, you will need to get her on a Lexia to see what (if any) fault codes there are, and to try and clear them.
