Having studied the figures as per my previous post it now looks like the new car will be a 2.2hdi as they are out there and available and more economical than the 2.0 hdi16v! although both seem to have been banned from London.
The one that was tempting me to go for a saloon was this little beauty http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
49,000miles with a good history, a bit expensive but I'm sure it could be negotiated down.
It needs negotiating down about £1500! Ye gods, that's so overpriced.

It'll also need a timing belt - it says nothing about that on the ad.. Mine has everything that has apart from working AC and leather. I think the AC is probably just a leaking condensor, haven't checked!

Facelift is nice 2.0ltr HDI and Auto combo....nice car at £1800 by the look (subject to inspection :) and given I like that colour )

Thanks for all the feedback guys, in the end, after a 300 mile round trip to see a nice sounding 2.2 exclusive auto estate, and after some excellent advice from BL auto's to look out for a weeping suspension pipe above the offside front wishbone which is potentially a very expensive repair ( there WAS a damp patch on the wishbone) I rejected the car and was so impressed by the way the Xantia ate up the miles on the journey, I decided to shelve the C5 idea for now and get the van first. I'm now the owner of a 55 plate Dispach so stand by for questions on that. 110bhp HDI and goes better than the Xantia!
That red one does look nice and is very good value however it's NOT an auto, it's not an exclusive and it's not got leather, all things I was looking for, it's also done 146,000 miles. Given that taking those things out of the equation throws up so many good value options I may well reconsider when the time comes.
I still fancy a 2.0 HDI 16v auto, notwithstanding the fuel consumption figures being worse than the 2.2, anyone running one and could give some real life figures?
Cheers

Ive no idea where you get the idea the 2.0 16v hdi is worse on fuel then the 2.2 .. from my expeiance in order the 2.0 8v hdi then the 2.0 16v hdi then the 1.6 16v hdi and then 2.2 16v being the worse and the 1.6 despite 110bhp is slowest out of them

It's from the figures on Autotrader, I know it's mad. Can I give you a nudge about the door rubbers Paul. Just rushing off to get the van inspected by BL auto's.

Ok, GJ on the Van

Re a choice of C5's , really the only thing the Exclusive gives you over at VTR is Leather and Sat nav. SatNav is next to useless at that age and leather is £150-250 on condition/colour and DIY fitting takes maybe 2 hours.
There is little to recommend looking for Exclusive's over VTR's these days. 2.0ltr engines are good for 200K and above BTW and if AutoTrader say the 2.2 is better than the 2.oLtr, then they are wrong.

If the 2.2 was better on fuel than the 2.0, I'd have one myself.

Here's two random cars, have a look at the consumption figures at the bottom of the pages. I know the prices are high. :-
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... gcode=visc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Those figures must be the official manufacturers.
What's wrong with 40mpg for an exclusive auto?
I did spot a manual 2.2 173bhp exclusive, from memory the fuel figures on that were a lot better than the manual 2.0 16v, and it was cheaper to insure than the Xantia! Very tempting, thank goodness it's gone now, I'd probably loose my license.
Figures for a manual 138bhp pretty good too http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However the 110 2.0HDI is the best, to get 55-58 on a long run was quite easy at 60-70 with a load of Rads.

Is that for an auto? I've been warned off that box but told the 2.2 0ne is ok.

A couple of years ago returning from Scotland I averaged 67.3 mpg over 670 miles at an average 50mph from the 2.0. 8 valve in my 406 estate. I tried to load the picture of the display but couldn't but I think its already on here somewhere.

That is with a manual box of course, I would think and auto would probably wipe at least10mpg off that.

I got slightly over this when I came down from Hartlepool after picking my current one up. Set the cruise to just fast enough to not annoy lorries and pottered all the way down. 68mpg!

My "best" was a return trip to Boston from Dorset, added out to be 65mpg, and that was with 450-Kg in the boot, again the manual.

With the manual.
Regarding the Auto, if its working OK and smooth, what else can you check ? ~ just budget for an oil change.
