Leaky Xantia

Post by chinkostu »

Sprung a leak on the old girl, 1995 N reg 1.9TD SX. the leak is at the rear of the engine, theres a rubber pipe that runs along the subframe and up over the H/C then connects to a metal pipe and has split right at the join. is this easily repaired as there isn't a massive amount of leeway for me to cut the offending part off and sleeve it back on. Servicebox shows this pipe as being one piece although mine has a clamp connecting the hose to the line??

Its the PAS Return Hose! Becomming a common item for splitting now as the age builds up...

There isnt really that much room for cut down and push on - I think Once you can just do it, but if it splits again the pipe will be too short and will then need extending with a join and pipe...

The Pipe is part of a "Return Harness" with a umber of other returns to tank... Ive got one in a box awaiting sending to Spain to help repair a LHD car.. I would NOT like to replace it on the car either!

What sort of pipe am i looking for to splice into it? Would rather cut back to good hose and bridge it together with some new hose but aren't these silly high pressures and need a specific hose type?

NO, the thick rubber hose is "Quantity Flow Return" and NOT pressure return! So its not a high pressure, its high flow rate...

Im not one to advise the type of rubber hose to use, theres others here that know better then me for that... Sorry..

Yes should be.. just a join with for example a copper pipe with two hose clips.. should do it well enough.

Anyone have any idea on the ID of the return pipe? Saves me slicing a bit off!

If it's the pipe I'm thinking of then splicing it is the only easy way as the pipe is an integral part of the mass of return pipes that end up at the LHM reservoir. They all join and take on the appearance and form of an octopus! Replacement of the lot is a massive undertaking!

So, chop out the bad bit and splice in a bit of new. Use pipe that's rated as good for unleaded petrol and all will be fine.

I find generally the pipe perishes right at the point where it joins the metal pipe and it's fine beyond that point.

Thats exactly where it split! Seems a bit tight as well so might have been a previous fix beforehand.

Im looking at using a bit of joiner, some new hose and obviously clamps but don't have any idea of the diameter of the pipe, i could cut it out then nip to the locals but if anyone has it to hand it would save me a good hour!

I think it's 8mm ID (Internal Diameter) but it's been a while and I'm not 100% certain..

Hopefully someone can confirm....

i would cut a section/length of the original pipe off, cut the split piece off then use a length of metal pipe to join the two good section back together,

thats an idea. would need a good few inches of metal hose though, is it usual to be able to order by length? i assume it would need flanges/ ferrules (what on earth are they called? the nobbly bits!) too to stop it simply sliding off?

Fixed :D luckily there was enough length left in the hose to make it reach. I have the old bit of pipe for measuring so when the time comes i can add the length back in :D hose had completely perished where the clamp was sat
