1998 Xantia 1.9TD COUPLE OF ISSUES

Post by DublinChris »

Its been a while since I have been on here but my Series 2 1.9 turbo diesel now has 187000 miles up. I have a couple of problems that have developed and was looking for some pointers. This afternoon when I started her up I got what sounds like alternator belt slipping. On start up I am getting loud screeching sound until revs build up to 2K +.After a minute or so of running noise goes and while warm does not reappear. Belt looks very shinny and I just don't remember when it was last changed. Am I right in thinking its the belt at this stage?

The other issue is the diesel pump. A while back we noticed drips from the plastic tube on top of the pump. I showed it to a diesel pump repair specialist and he says its a problem with one of the ball bearings inside the pump and pump is filling with diesel. I had planned to have pump reconditioned next month, however as of Sunday I noticed a bigger leak which at first we thought might have been from a cracked balance pipe on the injectors. We changed the pipes but this was not the cause. On further investigation we believe that a seal on the cover at back of pump - which corresponds with the cover at bottom on front - is dripping. Diesel seems to be running down front of block behind alternator.

I am wondering if maybe diesel has sprayed onto alternator belt and is causing it to slip? would it just slip at start up if diesel had got onto belt or would it be a more continuous slippage? Might it just be coincidence and that the belt needs to be changed anyway? What would best way to clean old belt be if it is the diesel at fault?

Lots of questions I know!!

Chris, check that the aux drive pulley is intact, mine squealed on startup and when I had a good look at the system, the outer part of the pulley was free on the inner section - replace the belt too

Look for a 'crack' line around the pulley. I could stop mine with my thumb but it was truly stuffed and I would not recommend this test ;) scary

Thanks guys for the alt belt advice will check it out in morning and get it replaced - as I said cant remember last time it was replaced. I was just wondering if it was coincidence that it started following the diesel pump leak which is running down block behind alternator?

I guess yours is a Bosch one with pot on top that goes to ecu? and from what you put it's below that on the bit that sticks up has a little plastic trumpet on it theres a seal there that can leak but it's a pump off job well ive found a way to de armour in situ but destroys case in doing as the ones that hard to get out/at is at top of shield as there is a hardened still pin that comes through from back of it but our side is blank need to drill/cut through that then can after cutting slots in other 2 shear off bolts remove.
I'm sure someone cleverer will be along soon that has some pictures for you

Have the 1.9td's not got the solid pulley? I think my first dual mass pulley was on the hdi .

:) OK so brought car to my mechanic and he discovered that the lower bolt holding the steering pump in place had loosened because the nut had fallen off - not an uncommon problem so he says. The bolt itself was protruding out and rubbing against the pulley - this was causing a low noise that I had noticed. On checking the belt it was found to be in good condition and not contaminated by any diesel spray so it was re tensioned and the noise is now gone so all good there. I did have one of the pulleys replaced about 2 months ago so apparently the belt can loosen off after a while and this seemed to be the cause.

Now its the diesel pump that remains the issue so hopefully Monday week I might get it removed and the leaks fixed 8-)

Out of interest, I'm awaiting a definitive reply from the experts. I'm sure I've read that the TDs do have solid pulley, but my hazy recollection of mine (never a problem) is that there looks to be a slight recess in the pulley which could be where a 1/8" thick solid rubber shock absorber could be located. I must investigate & prod it a little when the road wheel's next off

No - certainly later 1.9tds have damper pulleys. The Green Lady (S1 built Jan 1996) definitely has one and given her age, it's something I check from time to time; indeed, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to get a new one while they're still available. Another part that KingAS will be re-manufacturing perhaps?
