Leak around clutch pedal

Hi,
Just spotted a brownish stain on mat directly under clutch pedal almost a weak smell of varnish and a tad sticky, If that's the LHM, some things wrong as I only had it flushed and replaced 11 months ago with total lhm and covered about 4000 miles.
Hope this isn't an expensive repair, just paid insurance and tax is next with MOT and service before end of November and now this leaky clutch.

Looks like I'm going to have to wrap the kid's presents from last year and see what happens...

Sadly I can only think that it's clutch fluid - which is bad.... Never seen it before! Clutch hydraulics are once piece, and difficult (impossible with the engine in?) to replace. If they are still available they are fearsomely expensive from Citroen(*) - so you will need to go SH, or try and get the seals in the master replaced. Paul (citroenxm) may have several in his shed . It might be possible to adapt the hydraulics from a C5 or 406 - no idea.

* NFP as expected - last listed at £580 Xantia only, nothing on the bay from a quick search.

Is it an hydraulic clutch though? If not it may be LHM from the brake doseur, dissolving crap and making it brown, which is not necessarily better news.

Well, in the signature it shows a 110HP Xantia HDi as the current vehicle.

I never remember which models are hydraulic and which have bits of string.
Easy enough to check the clutch reservoir though - if there isn't one then the question is answered

The Hydraulic ones are the Activa, 2.1TD 110HDi and manual V6. All else is cable...

No it's not It's buried deep in the bulkhead and almost inaccessible... As said, it's not made to be serviced...

That the leaky stuff is sticky suggests it is sadly the clutch fluid...

It could be right on top of the clutch pedal in the footwell Steve. Rover 75s have them there, under the dash effectively. It's a real contortionist job to top up and they're made to be topped up as the clutch slave has a bleed nipple..

It's a Hydraulic clutch, 2001 110 Hdi Xantia. Took her to see the specialist 2 hours ago (car drove without fault when changing gears as usual smooth as ever) he say's clutch travel is perfect and the slip at the top is as should be (not sure what he meant by that) he said to clean the clutch pedal arm and mat and see if further drips/stains appear on the arm or mat. Cleaned it up and this is the colour on tissue, specialist also pointed to this part, but my brain was calculating all sorts of possible repair costs that I forgot what he was saying...
If it is the clutch master cylinder can it be repaired as in the seals replaced if not do I look for any 406 110 hdi to replace it with.





When I saw this on ebay and on compatibility it showed 109hdi xantia mark 2 I wanted it to be true. (what do you chaps think)

How long would it take a mechanic to take out strip and replace the seals if they are the culprits on clutch master cylinder, also if I ignore the leak and no further leakage appears could I be causing further damage to the master cylinder and a knock on effect to the slave cylinder

I'm buggered if I can't get this problem fixed, I don't want to be stripping the car and selling her on ebay.

Searched Peugeot 406 110 Hdi on euro parts and up this came for master cylinder it also had the slave cylinder advertised, do you think this will be ok..

Different part is listed for the 406 to the Xantia - and the Xantia part number doesn't turn up any hits on the pug parts list sadly. Not to say that the 406 unit couldn't be made to fit! I doubt new seals can be fitted as the unit is probably plastic. Haynes rates removal of the hydraulics as 4 spanners - and indicates access to the master cylinder is from below The cylinder you posted doesn't look like what I imagine the Cit unit to look like - but again not to say it can't be adapted to fit. The trouble with the Xantia unit is that it doesn't have a bleed facility so it needs to be 'hot bled' or a bleed nipple fabricated and fitted. citroenxm is the only person who is likely to have a spare! Sadly I doubt yours will heal itself, and eventually you will end up with no clutch.

If I cant buy the parts that I need new, then I'm buggered as I won't know the condition of what I'm buying second hand if it's all a sealed unit. What's the chances the leakage is switch lubricant that has leaked out of either the wiper switch or the light switch stalk, as we all know the light switch stalk has a habit of getting the indicator contacts dirty and causing the indicator relay to click on/off, it may have warmed the lubricant enough for it to flow out, posted to me by a FCF member via email.
