My wife took her C4 diesel in to Citroen dealer in Dundee today for MOT.

Suddenly all these need sorted before they would pass it. I don't think they even MOTd.

Osf track rod end £128.33
Nsr caliper, rear brake disks and pas £582.20
Wipers £30
Fuel treatment £30

She says this is just for the parts.

What are your thoughts on these prices. Incidentally they also said the clutch may be going so the kit for this is £700 odd.

Seriously, that sounds like a rip-off in the making. A track rod end should cost no more than a third of their quote fitted and possibly less. It's a simple job and a simple part.

I got a free MOT voucher from Citroen so used it but as it back came with a number of failures (and overpriced repairs) - one of them being number plates which allows them to put their ad/logo on your car (these are the same number plates I have now which have since passed many MOT's btw) - I felt I had reason to doubt the honesty of it so I got a "second opinion" and it passed without even advisories of the failures Citroen had listed. This is my one and only experience of Citroen MOT's so make it of what you will.

£30 for wiper blades? I put Bosch ones on for a tenner. Bloke in the shop even fitted them, insisted on it.

£30 for fuel treatment? They can't possibly recommend fuel treatment for an MOT. If the emissions are high they should just fail it but an Italian Tune Up will do more good anyway - present it after a thrashing.
Forte fuel treatment/injector cleaner is only about £13 anyway.

£128 for track rod ends. From prices I have paid you should be looking around £40 each side fitted.

I would take the clutch advice with a pinch of salt too and they are way too high on the price. I paid £498 for a clutch and DMF, fitted. A few other bits and bobs thrown in with that, nothing major.

Discs pads and callipers way overpriced too, I recently paid £495.83 for: Exhaust, drop links, ball joints, suspension gaiter, rear discs, callipers & pads, tensioner & belt, injectors - test refurbish & calibrate.
That's both sides, discs, callipers & pads and drop links. The injectors were outsourced, the refurbish to one injector was £95 of that total, the others were OK.

You need to move somewhere they charge sensible prices.

If all else fails, ask a taxi-driver. They tend to get their cars serviced cheap but reliable.

Track rod ends are about £35 at Citroen, so they are looking for £90 to fit one. Not bad for 1/2 hours work

Even if it needs a rear brake overhaul (which I would think unlikely) anywhere non dealer would be much cheaper!

My Sister in law had her Scenic in at the dealer for a dash replacement in the summer. Told her it needed new discs and pads all round - quote was approaching 4 figures. She politley declined... I had a look at it a couple of weeks later. Front discs are probably around min thickness, and have a lip on on them, but are otherwise wearing evenly, and there is plenty of meat on the pads. Good for at least 10k yet - and I would re-use the discs after taking the grinder to the lip (although would probably fit new on theirs if I did it). Rears were in good shape, discs fine, plenty of life left in the pads. No idea what the garage was on about....apart from money making

It transpires that when my wife said she was taking the car away they then tried to real her in saying that they could get "cheaper" parts which while not Citroen parts were Citroen Approved.

They also said that while it had failed the MOT they had never tested the emmissions as it "looked like it would fail"

In my mind this indicates that they never carried out an MOT and my wife has no print out of failure to prove it. Indeed even the part ptices are just written on a ripped otf part ot an envalope. Not the presentation I would expect from a dealer. All kinda fly by night. I feel they clearly were at it and trying it on. But then I have no idea re prices. All I know is that some of those prices are way above similar worl I had done on my cars.

Think I'd be tempted to take it elsewhere, then depending on the results, contacting either Local Trading Standards, or better still The D.V.S.A.

I would suggest contacting both Citroen UK and your local Trading Standards. That is a 'garage' that deserves being closed down. Citroen won't like their reputation being muddied, and Trading Standards won't like members of the public being taken for fools.
