Citroen ZX Temptation 1.9d R-Reg (121000)
Just wondering if there could be another reason other than hitting the accelerator hard which is giving me considerably less mileage, had the car about 3 months now and had a service about 2 months ago.
LOW MPG

In my experience of the normally-aspirated 1.9D XUD engine (in a BX), it's VERY difficult to drive the car hard enough to cause MPG problems because of the very lazy, torquey nature of the engine. Mine seemed to give an average of 45mpg or so in both urban traffic and even when driven full-tilt on a couple of motorway dashes. Yes, I do know, full-tilt for the 1.9D is another engine's gentle jog.
Are there any other symptoms, and have you checked the air filter lately?

Well i had the thermostat replaced when i got the car as the fan never seemed to kick in (dont worry all sorted now) so i know it has a new thermostat in it. Will try replacing the air filter, since its cheap quick test.
Well on a full tank im luck to get about 450 before red hits (and do 80 miles a day, so i need to fill up if im on red). Use to get into the 500's but never seem to get it anymore.

I used to get 42 mpg from my last Xantia TD, the current one does 48, over long dual carriageway journeys.
42 MPG is probably low for a ZX with a normally aspirated 1.9 D

well fair enough I get 48 on a longer run, but I do a lot of round town trips
I only get about 300-350 miles from full until the red light comes on, which I think means my light must come on quite prematurely!! I only get about 35 litres in there.

From own experience with an '89 19RD I know the air filter needs service every 10Kkm (6Kmiles). It will clogg up with oil and dirt.
The foam type filter can be cleaned and re-used several times.
I had to restrict the area of the oil fume hose going in to the filter canister. This had a very good effect on the oil contamination of the filter.
