Alternative to Tax Disc

Post by rory_perrett »

The Xantia VED (Car Tax) is due for renewal at the end of the month. With the change in the rules in the UK I think this means I will no longer receive a "Tax" Disc to display on my windscreen. After all these years that's going to look and feel a bit strange - and I bet I'm not the only one who feels this way. So suggestions please as to what I can put in its place - how about a FCF Logo.

Now that is an idea. If FCF were to charge a few quid that would help with the running costs of the forum, and possibly it could be used to indicate membership and a small discount at some car rallies.

Good idea Rory :-D

I know a person who can do some stickers or discs. Russ92xmsed over on club-xm. He's done lots of similar and if there's sufficient interest I’ll have words and see what he can do for us and get a feel for the costs..

Do feel free to contribute to forum running costs. The forums (FCF and BXC together as they share hosting and technical maintenance) do have a bank account and a PayPal account for donations which will be gratefully received.

Generally the money is used to buy any special hardware as required, pay domain registrations and the email provider subscriptions. The time spent by the admins, electricity to run the servers and Internet access is all free... The last item is free because I also use it for my own website and email so to charge it to the forums would be very naughty indeed.

You'll never make a politician Jim

My son just taxed his bike and the disc was just bubble-jet printed onto standard A4 paper with some bumf that constituted a receipt of sorts.

I've been promoted to manager almost against my will (cuts, a personality clash, and the fact no one else would do it and we'd have had yet another team re - or if I hadn't). It's not so much my staff that bother me, it's the (-expletive removed-) above me that I have to buffer the s**t from.

Mike, you have my sympathy. I have had a time as a manager at work and I failed miserably at it. It all ended in a nervous breakdown for me...

Managers, like politicians and diplomats are born and not made.

Same, at the opposite end of the spectrum, goes for engineers. Generally excellent engineers make rubbish managers.

Likewise brilliant managers are generally poor engineers.

I speak from experience of nearly 40 years in my profession.

:rofl2: I been having the same thought creep into my subconcious but shooo-ed it away before it caused real cognitive dissonance. I quite like my disc holder backing (an ad for monkey world with chimp faces) and will miss it.

My cousin Bob had a contract a few years ago generating a large system of some sort (he wasn't at liberty to say what). His first task was to interview and select the team to work with him (also all contractors). One of his requirements was that the client went through him for all the communications, as he was the team leader, and the client agreed to this (as it made sense to the client that communications were managed properly). Unfortunately a senior member of the clients' staff thought they knew better, and tried to change the specifications, by talking directly to the programmers. They got on with Bob, and passed this on. History does not relate what happened to that idiot, but a very strongly worded communication was sent out by the client, and Bob and his team were never bothered again with unofficial changes.

Bob appears to be a software engineer who can manage very well (which is unusual).

I would part with some pounds for a FCF sticker the size of a tax disc. That's if we are using pounds euros or Scottish fitivertheyares :rofl2:

It's not that I can't do it, it's that I have no real interest in doing it. I don't like arse-licking, I don't really like dealing with personnel issues - having to give someone disciplinary action is just my idea of hell. Why can't I just take them aside and say "look, just a friendly word. Can you just stop being a ****?"... It's usually more effective

The other fun part is one of the guys I manage was offered the job on a 3 month trial back in Sept last year, did it (he was my manager!) but because of some personality clash with our overall manager, was told he hadn't done a good job, and they offered it to anyone who would apply as a "development opportunity". Because everyone had seen the way he'd been treated, no one wanted it. As we'd have had all our shift teams changed, and when you do 12 hour shift, it's important you get on with the others, I said I'd do it to save all that happening again. I've had to do appraisals, presentations, and other crap that I don't want to do, and don't like doing.

Oh.... and the other guy on my team... he was my manager when I joined this team, but detested doing it, so binned it off.. so I'm managing two ex-managers of my own, and one idiot. Obviously, we all get on well, and no one bears anyone grudges, but it could have been very awkward.

I'd rather just do my job and go home. I can do without all that nonsense.

Anyway, tax discs... I'll be glad to see the back of them. I've been printing them/scanning and printing them out for years.... Always did it on motorbikes, so I could keep the original at home in case the one on the bike got nicked, and did it for the 3 wheeler for ages so it appeared legal in Greece, even though it was SORN here...
