Getting a mechanic

Post by birdtraz »

Hi. I have a blinking dipped headlight warning light on my Xsara. I was going to get someone from here with a Lexia and ask if they could help but am now wondering if it's worth just getting the car checked over by a mechanic and having a service done. It's not worth a lot of money ( it is a 2004 model ) so I don't want to go to a main dealer.

My question is whether or not these mobile mechanics who offer diagnostics would be able to run a reasonable test on the car similar to that done by a main dealer. I have been told that French cars are not understood by many mechanics but being a novice when it comes to cars I have no idea if this is true or not.

What would you knowledgeable people recommend I do?

I think you may have a point about mobile mechanics not understanding older French cars weel, especially in the electrical and diagnostic areas.

If they don't have the genuine Citroen diagnostics they will struggle.

Hi Jim. I'm in Kent near Maidstone. I had a look at the list but couldn't find how to contact the nearest member to me. His profile was from a few years ago so I guess he might have left

If you need to get work done on your car this guy is well worth checking out (he contributes a lot to this forum, and knows his stuff);

Thanks for your help. I can't see a site and I'm off on holiday this weekend so I will PM him when I'm back.

Grateful for the recommendation :)

Would never use a mobile mechanic, so easy to ignore the phone when things go wrong. Can go to a garage and confront them should you need to.

Forgive any spelling mistakes, it's the phone not me.

h2ocooler is in the Chat'am area, and is pretty active, and Bandit12 is a bit further afield in the Northfleet/Gravesend area. I'm sometimes in the Gravesend area, but not there until the middle of next month, so probably not much use.

Thanks folks. H20cooler hasn't been on for a while from what I can see. Handyman is certainly nearest to me. I will send him a PM when I get back from holiday. I am away for a little while now.

Are these guys just doing this as a favour for forum members or what? Excuse my ignorance but I'm pretty new and not sure of the protocol

Meant to say I spoke to someone from a Citroen specialist today and he reckoned it is likely to be something small that's causing the problem. He advised not worrying about it unless something bigger happened. It would be nice to have the car checked over though

Thanks

Hi Guys. sorry I seem to have messed up looking for members. I tried to search for recent posts and must have failed dismally :)

Are the guys volunteer or are they doing it as a business? Sorry to ask such a basic question but I'm new here and not sure how it works?

John you're pretty close to me. Are you running it as a business?

Thanks again :)

I think that's up to the individual Lexia owner but I believe that the list is basically a list of people who'll stick a Lexia on for nothing or very little for forum members... I would, but I don't make a living out of it so the few business on the list might charge a little but nowhere near as much as a main dealer. I'd not say no if someone wanted to make a donation to my fuel if I traveled a long way to them or bring me a piece of chocolate cake but I'd never ask:-)

I have the Lexia, it might as well get used to help others if it can be.
