Car Adverts-Which ones stick?-in print and film

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Which car adverts stick in your mind? I love the old 60's and 70's adverts/promotional films and have posted one or 2 of them up in other threads with the most feeble of excuses/links :) . You have to admire the creativity and artistry involved in selling an image of their product to the general public. Then you have the marketing taglines. Your "Vorsprung durch Technik" and the like. Even good old British Leyland had a go with the Morris Marina....."The New Morris Marina....Beauty with Brains Behind it"

Well better keep it French for a starter for 10, although with the exception of "Nicole.....Papa", and Thierry Henry's "Je ne sais Quoi" and "Va Va Voom" (probably mercilessly plagiarised from the "Allegro's got Vroom") I struggle at the moment to remember any French gems... but you may know diffferent...

PS

Print/film/videos and billboards...

The Germans know a thing or two about effective advertising, even when demolishing fellow Germans!

Its interesting that the Honda, Ford and Mercedes, adverts themselves dont concern themselves much with selling the features of a particular car. The tag lines at the end are:

Ford Focus......"beautifully arranged",
Honda "The Power of Dreams", or "Isn't it nice when things just work"
Mercedes "Stability at all times Magic body control", "Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive" "Mercedes-The best or nothing"

So what are you subliminally bombarded with

The Ford focus is well put together?
Honda are a company who turn dreams into reality, are constantly creative, and make things that work.
Mercedes build stable safe cars and imagine they are the best

For me I think Honda of the three get the message across the best

Two from me..

The origianl Pug 405 advert with Berlin singing 'Take my breath away'...

The other is the old Pug 206 advert where the Indian lad turns his Hundustan Ambassador into a lookalike 206 using various means including a elephant.

Agreed Jim the Peugeot 405 advert is one that definitely sticks in the mind. The French fight back. Here it is for the younger forum members! Minor criticism of a classic though....what a boring colour for the car.....should have been a vibrant blue to contrast with the orange flames.

I'll have a go at finding the other one you mentioned

Ps got it :-D

Nicole/Papa

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Ah, time to give Nicole and Papa an airing. Everyone remembers those and probably did go some way towards selling a lot of Clio's. There is a series of at least 8, this one's the skiing one (number 3)

The finale involved Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer

Just had a look at youtube BW, there seems to be quite a collection of adverts for the Xantia, many in French, but off the top of my head I can't remember any of them!

Here's a French one with some token Dalmations in it...never made it over the channel.....maybe its funnier in French

regards Neil

ps Did find an old forum thread on Xantia adverts from 2007, but some of the links no longer work. There seems to be a fair crop on youtube now though.

This one picked out by Jim from the 2007 vintage thread still works.

I think even Xantia fanatics would have to admit that the advertising was not that memorable....

Where was this filmed?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

A tiny amount of investigation, will reveal where this iconic Rover 200 series launch advert was filmed. I know cos I was there, and it was a misty damp day although you dont notice it on the film. As with all these "glamourous" film making events, it consisted mainly of a lot of people standing round not seeming to do anything for ages, with a very short burst of not very difficult "acting" ie a bloke running up the steps.

To point you in the right direction try googling North-East Town Halls and trawl through them until you match up the architecture.

I'll post the answer up and claim the pints myself if no-one gets it.

Neil, thanks for finding the videos of my favourite adverts :-D

I had a 405 in the very same colour as the one in the advert. Same vintage too. Great car!

I must be old. It really doesn't seem so long ago

I note in the Activa advert the narrator cannot pronounce Xantia  Maybe we have it wrong as I never emphasise the X as he seemed to do, pronouncing it X-antia.

Is it not pronounced more like santia as in the other advert with a soft z?
