Ahh yes of course. The Saab 99 series engine was based on the old Triumph Slant 4 or half the V8 Stag engine...

It was only an old nail because it was so poorly built by Triumph. Ditto the Stag engine. Casting sand left in the water passages was never the way to go...

The Stag V8 is now a well-sorted and reliable engine and well-loved. I must say it sounds ace.

The Slant 4 also spawned the 16 valve Dolly Sprint engine.. That was well-loved in its day...

Te owner of the RX-8 wanted V6 power, ES9J4 to be precise) or nothing. Many alternative power plants were suggested, including a small jet engine, but none found favour so the project was binned :(

Rover did a prototype jet powered car in the 50s. It looked lovely. There's on in the BMH Museum at Gaydon which, incidentally, is well worth a visit.

Do take a box of hankies though as the missed opportunities for the British motor industry you'll see there will bring floods of tears to the strongest

The V8 was two slant 4s stuck together wasn't it, with all the horrors that could possibly occur from doing such a thing occurring in abundance? Weird heads that you could remove without taking out the overhead cams, single temperature sensor in one head (so the other could overheat and you wouldn't know!)

Saab took the slant 4 and made it reliable, so much so that I know that some Saab parts are used by the Triumph gang as upgrades.

My second car was a Stag Mk2, knowing that they had a slight reputation for overheating I kept a very close eye on the coolant level by way of regularly removing the plug on top of the radiator rather than trusting the level in the header tank. The issue here was that the coolant level in the radiator would require regular topping up whereas the level in the header never dropped leading me to believe may well have been reason so many of them overheated.

Nice pair with very little connection spotted out and about. Not sure whether the Renault 4 has the attributes to be described as a GTl particularly if the "l" stands for luxury. Saying that, I have personally done a "gran turismo", 5 plus luggage, in a Ford Fiesta, from Northumberland to le Grand Bornand in the Alps :). I think I may still describe the Anglia as a "Super" saloon though.

But that R4 is the posh one Neil. It's got the GTL rubbing strips and reversing lights on it 8-)

They look lovely in yellow :-D

I love the R4. I had two as a teenager..

Never had an Anglebox and have no experience of them whatsoever bar considering them hideously ugly.

Spot on. The Victoria is the Spanish bit, built in Pamplona, also built in South Africa and known as the Apache.

The same designer did this

although probably more famous for his other works including this

I think he must have lost his mind in his later years, poor old Giovanni. Imagine designing the Ferrari 250MM, and then that plastic turd..
