I think that's partly it. No weight, no real momentum, and the fibreglass does actually bend quite a lot before it breaks. I'd not want to crash one myself, but if you watch Reliant Robin racing, they don't have take a battering and not fall apart.

This looks like an interesting beast.

i'd defiantly prefer to do 85 mph in a dershy ( 2CV ) or 110 in a 5 speed gear box 1.3 GSA than in one of those wheel barrows :yikes: :roll: :shock: :wink:
I've done over 90 in a GSA 1.3 powered 2cv. It's hilarious on the motorway

i quite often followed my daughter in her dersh ( 2CV )on motorways in my NA D BX at 85mph,
she hadnt a clue she were doing that speed as theres a pin/stop in the speedo at 70mph

Oh no, it'll go much faster than that :-)

All 5 2cvs I had in the past would cruise with the needle on the stopper. I once drove one 210 miles in 2hrs 45min which is an average speed of somewhat more than the manufacturers claimed top speed!

I'm just a grumpy Northern git.

This talk of Reliants has brought back a few memories.
My first job in the retail motor trade was at a dealership which had a franchise for the Reliant Scimitar, sometimes I had to go to the 'factory' in Tamworth to collect new vehicles and drive them back to London. The 'factory' was a ramshackle, muddy, collection of sheds and outbuildings and cars in various stages of completion could be seen being wheeled around the site into the different workshops. A production line it was not.
Having got the cars back to London, the fun then started with the pre delivery inspection. There were set times for the many and various repair jobs needed to get the cars ready for delivery. The AVERAGE labour time the dealership charged the factory for the PDI was 24hrs!! One car I remember having 3 or 4 back axles fitted before they got a good one.
Surprisingly, having made it on to the road they weren't that bad, reliability wise, compared to other cars of the time.
I've never driven one of the smaller ones but friends had them on motorbike licenses and one had a Bond bug, that was interesting, more than once whilst a passenger he had it on its door handles.

The other loose end was the pics of the Reliant Rialto, and also the very pleasing Reliant Sabre, probably the best looking Reliant of all unless you know better!

The Scimitar still looks very tasty to my eyes...

I have quite a fondness for them and one car I'd think of having if I didn't subscribe to a passion for old double chevrons. The others are a Rover P6 V8 and a Matra Bagheera...

The Bagheera is a car I really do desire... Love 'em to bits despite the rattly old Simca underpinnings...

It is, but the current owner doesn't want to sell it, and (apparently) only fires it up twice a year. Jim would be turning in his grave (but I think he was cremated!) if he knew.

I do like Scims. I nearly bought one, but bought a Capri 2.8i instead, a choice I'm not sure was wise or not. I was lucky enough to drive one that had been tampered with and had a load of Burton Power bits thrown at it. It was still only 160bhp or so, but given that in the true Reliant style it was made out of damp weetabix, it weighed bugger all and went like stink.

My dad's friend used to be into them until someone hit him up the rear about 10 years ago at some lights, quite hard. Fibreglass car, petrol tank slung behind the rear axle, rear impact, split petrol tank, petrol thrown forwards, and ignited... It wasn't pretty. Neville escaped, but with serious burns.. he prefers classic bikes now as they're safer.
