Lexia Cable issues

Post by Trainman »

When I originally purchased my Lexia/Peugeot Planet, I discovered that the OBD to 30 Square Pin adaptor (used no older models ie Xantia and XM) wouldn't work

Image

I decided therefore to purchase the 30 pin Circle to 30 Pin Square adaptor, however, this didn't work either.

Image

In a conversation with a couple of people I was sent a couple of diagrams from http://pinoutsguide.com/search.php?lang=eng&t=citroen" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; these show the pin locations of what the wiring of each unit should be, however, I don't believe they are perfect, therefore what I'm after are is a diagram from a working cable, either of the above two pictures would be good, basically if somebody can pin out for me using a multimeter, which pins go to where, I would be grateful.

I'm copying to layouts of the connections at each end of the cable

Image

I also have a crude diagram of the pin out of my 30 pin Round connection to 30 pin Square connection

Hi Steve,

I've traced the OBD-II 16 in to 30 pin PSA rectangular connector for you. The orientation of the 30 pin connector on the pinoutsguide link you posted is a bit misleading - not only are 1 and 3 reversed when looking at the plug (since their picture is the socket in the car, not the plug) you also have to reverse A and J... which gets confusing. (I confirmed the orientation below is correct by checking for consistency of the +12v and ground wires between the two plugs, since we know those for sure on both plugs) See the photo below for the correct pin numbering and orientation:

Image

Referring to the above pinouts, here are the connections, as well as my best guess at the function of each one, based on the pinouts on the pinoutsguide page. (There is some ambiguity on a couple of them...)

30 pin PSA / 16 pin OBD-II / Function

A1 / 16 / +12 volts
A2 / 1 / Switched (?) +12 volts
A3 / 4 / Chassis Ground
C1 / 7 / Engine ECU K-line
C2 / 15 / Engine ECU L-line (?)
D2 / 13 / GMV2 test (?)
E1 / 6 / K-line ABS
E2 / 11 / K-line Clearance adjustment (Hydractive 2 ?)
E3 / 12 / K-line Steering wheel module
F1 / 14 / K-line Heater / Aircon
F3 / 8 / K-line Air Bag
G1 / 2 / K-line Gearbox ECU
H3 / 9 / K-line Door lock
I1 / 10 / K-line Rear view mirror
I2 / 3 / K-line Anti-theft alarm
I3 / 10 / K-line Immobiliser

Note: I1 and I3 both being connected to pin 10 on the OBD-II connector is not a typo.

Hope that helps Steve :)

I'll see if I get a chance to trace from the round connector right through to the 30 pin rectangular one tomorrow, but the above should give you something to work with...

Simon, that's great, as you say something to start with....

Just checked the cable with your info and not 1 of the pins is working, so looks like I need to find out why....... #-o

Interesting thing looking at the OBD-II pinouts, is that the only connections that are OBD-II compliant are the power, ground, and the engine ECU K and L lines (7 and 15) - every other pin use for all the other ECU's is non standard! (This is one reason generic OBD-II readers can't read a S2 Xantia even though it has an OBD-II style connector...)

Hmm, sure you don't have the 30 pin connector upside down ?

If not, you might have a dud...

Also, I had to use a safety pin at each plug to make contact with the pins, meter probes won't make contact with either one...

Another useful tip is that only the pins I've listed actually exist in the 30 pin connector - the other pins are empty holes with no terminals. Shine a light into the holes and you'll soon see if the correct ones are present.

Oh, and I've just remembered that I've had the sliding bit on the 30 pin connector right off before, so I may have put it back on back to front... so look closely at the orientation of the white bits around the pin holes...

Can anyone confirm whether the sliding clip on mine is the right way around ?

I've taken the clip right off mine I'm afraid as it's much easier to get it to work without it.

Compared your lead against mine, and you have the clip the correct way around.

David.
That's a great suggestion David, perhaps the clip on mine is preventing the connector fully seating, which could be preventing a few of the pins from contacting and thus explain why a few of the ECU's in mine aren't responding... I'll try it next time with the clip removed.

I have found that some ECUs on a Xantia with a 30 pin connector just won't talk to a Lexia 3 but will talk to a Lexia 2. A/C, airbag, mirror come to mind.

Funny you mention that because I have been out testing David's suggestion of removing the clip. Not sure if it helped or if repeated attempts to connect did, but these are the ECU's I can establish communication with:

Anti-theft
Injection
Air con
ABS
Suspension
Gearbox

The ones I can't connect to:

Airbag
Rear view mirror
Deadlocks

I have a suspicion what it might be too. I think there may be some wires missing in the round connector to OBD-II connector cable - not all of the wires on the OBD-II connector are needed for talking to a S2 Xantia (I believe) as many ECU's share the same K-lines, but on the S1 every ECU has its own independent K-line except for the rear view mirror and immobiliser which share the same k-line.

The OBD-II to 30 pin rectangular adaptor uses every pin except pin 5, while I'm sure a S2 Xantia doesn't use that many pins. Thus some connections could be missing from the round connector to OBD-II connector without affecting a S2, but prevent communication to some ECU's on a S1 via the adaptor.

On the other hand a cable with round connector directly to 30 pin rectangular may have all of the necessary wires connected.

I'll try tracing back from the 30 pin rectangular connector all the way to the round connector with the adaptor connected and see if they actually all go anywhere - I suspect a few will not, specifically F3, I1, and H3.

Well it was a nice theory, but those three pins do in fact connect all the way back to the round connector, so it must be something else...

Steve, here is the wiring from the round connector all the way through to the 30 pin rectangular connector.

The pins on the round connector are actually numbered on the plug but the method of counting them is a little ambiguous so I thought it best to take a photo and show the pin numbers as I interpreted them:

Image

Here are the pinouts referring to the above picture and the 30 pin rectangular connector on my previous post:

30 pin rectangular PSA / 30 pin round connector / Function

A1 / 5 / +12 volts
A2 / 22 / Switched (?) +12 volts
A3 / 3 and 4 / Chassis Ground
C1 / 25 / Engine ECU K-line
C2 / 12 / Engine ECU L-line (?)
D2 / 2 / GMV2 test (?)
E1 / 8 / K-line ABS
E2 / 14 / K-line Clearance adjustment (Hydractive 2 ?)
E3 / 7 / K-line Steering wheel module
F1 / 26 / K-line Heater / Aircon
F3 / 1 / K-line Air Bag
G1 / 11 / K-line Gearbox ECU
H3 / 6 / K-line Door lock
I1 / 30 / K-line Rear view mirror
I2 / 27 / K-line Anti-theft alarm
I3 / 30 / K-line Immobiliser

Hope this helps. :)

Simon,

30 pin Round: I haven't had chance to compare what you have with mine, however, David has sent me what he knows to be a good lead in the post, which should be here tomorrow.

OBD: The lead I had was a complete dud, of the 16 pins I could not get a connection with a single pin, now on the hunt for a replacement, subject to how the 30 pond round connection works out against David's.

Steve,

The cable that David loaned you, which one of the two types was it, (30 pin round to 30 pin rectangular, or OBD-II to 30 pin rectangular) and are you able to get a response from the Airbag, Rear View mirror and Deadlock ECU's ?

For info ... this is a 'real' lexia as well :)

I'd not worry too much about it.

But .... if you find a way
My Lexia 3 read ALL the ECU's on my S2, which is why I'm a bit annoyed I can't read them all on the S1.

I have an idea what it could be but won't have time to investigate for a while. I need to make a breakout cable for the 30 pin (rectangular) connector that I can put a scope on and use to transpose certain wires.

I have a hunch that the pinouts for the OBD-II to 30 pin rectangular adaptor may be different for Lexia 2 and Lexia 3, with the commonly available adaptors wired for the Lexia 2 not Lexia 3...

On second thoughts making a breakout cable for the OBD-II connector might be easier since its a standard connector...
