I was nearly killed in an Avenger in 1976. They handled like a wet octopus

And rusted rather well too... Like the Marina they looked sensational and still look good now.. I think the Avenger was the better of the two on balance although there was only a fag paper in it...

I believe it was also sold in the States as the Plymouth Cricket..

A genuine Tiger Avenger is still a bit on the desirable side...

You should have seen what they made using the Avenger as a starting point, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Centura" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another nicely upholstered pair Adam :!:

Looks like they did a few Centuras with the vinyl roof, where's the vinyl roof gone now?

And here's an avenger just for those who never knew or have forgotten what it looked like

And let's not forget the Avenger’s big sister - the Chrysler 180...

Possibly a relevant joke?

What do you get if you cross a pair of poplar trees with a pair of great tits?

Was the Hillman Hunter any relative? My dad had one of those, but I don't think I've ever been in an Avenger despite my schoolfriend's parents and some of my family owning all manner of tat in the 70s and 80s.

Nope, the Hunter was the Rootes Arrow and almost entirely different. The Avenger was a new design. At least Rootes didn't do as BL did and try to rehash old stuff into something new.

I guess the Avenger happened only on the back of the Plymouth Cricket development state-side as I can't imagine Rootes in the UK on their own had the resources to develop a fully new car.

The Avenger and Arrow range ran concurrently for a number of years. The Arrow was variously the Minx, Hunter, Sunbeam Rapier, Singer Vogue and Humber Sceptre. The latter being the posh one and the Sunbeam and Singer being available as a rather tasty Coupé.

There was also the hot Hunter, the H120 Holbay and that went quite well. Bit of a Q-car as externally it looked just like any other Hunter.

An odd fact about the Avenger was that it was never under-sealed from the factory. Another legacy of it's Cricket roots possibly as rust was never such a problem in the land across the pond.

That's the one except dad's was Island Blue and wore the plate JOM 414E. A lovely colour. I still wonder what became of it because when Dad traded it in for the Marina in 1972 it was immaculate.

Parked next to a pininfarina today....

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Yes there it was in all its glory the product of the famous Italian design house pininfarina. I had been reading a little bit about their history just that morning.

A fine track record of car design, and responsible for this one-off Citroen

Image

So what car was their famous badge on?

This :!:

"Ah, Mr Pininfarina, Mr Hyundai here. Can you design me a metal box with a wheel at each corner?"

Regards Neil

Ps anyone know the name of the one-off Citroen?
