C5 Manual Gearbox 2001 filler and drain plug

Unread post by olliewarwick1 »

Hi All,

I've had a bit of an issue with my father's car. I changed the ball joint yesterday and the drive shaft came out of the gearbox and oil went everywhere. I have some oil for this gearbox (Total BV) and I've been trying to find the fill and drain plug for the gearbox, but currently no luck. Has anyone got a picture or anything that can help me? Also what socket can I use to get the plugs out?

It's a 2001 C5 Manual 2.0 Hdi.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ollie

As far as I know there is no fill plug on your gearbox, and therefore the usual way to fill the box is via the breather plug on the top surface.

The drain plug is a circular plug situated on the bottom of the gearbox right at the back of the bay. You really have to get under to see it. It is not a hex socket, but needs a square section wrench (which I believe is a Citroen specific tool?) although if you have square sump plug type sockets you may find one that fits.

I don't believe there is a level plug either so its a case of inserting the required 2.1 litres through the breather hole. The breather hole is on the top of the gearbox, you may need to remove the airbox to see it properly. It will be capped with black plastic cap which just pops off. Total BV 7580 is the recommended stuff.

Sam, thanks very much for your help. I couldn't find the breather hole so I took out the reverse light switch and managed to get the oil in that way, seem to work ok. I found another post that said it was 1.8 litres, citroen said it was 1.9 litres, so now I'm really confused. I've put in 1.9 as that is about the average of all of them, and it's working ok. I also measured roughly what came out which was just under that (plus spillage).

I managed to get an 8mm square plug to fit enough to get the drain plug out.

Thanks again for your help.
