Master 2.2dci HELP!!

Unread post by dyla »

Hi there.
I recently bought a Master 2.2dci on an '02 plate. It's an ex British Gas van and has covered just over 100k.
The van was absolutely fine but i had no record of the cambelt being done, so out of caution, i had it done at a local garage. And thats where the problems started!
Not long after, the van became very slow starting in the morning and when i was driving, the van would sometimes cut out (just before boost, usually uphill and on a left hand corner).
I had the garage check it over and the only fault they could find was the fuel temp was at -46 deg! I know its cold in England but surely not that bad!
I got a second hand sensor, had it fitted and although the temp reading was fixed, the slow starting and cutting out was no different.
I drove it like this for a while as the mechanic told me it may be a split wire in the loom somewhere and that i should try to find it and repair.

Thinking ahead, i decided to try and change the fuel filter and upon removal i noticed it was black as the ace of spades! I replaced it with a new one and hey presto, Sorted! For a week...
Every time the vehicle is stood for a couple of hours, there is air in the clear fuel line at the top of the filter housing. I will check the lines between the injectors yhis weekend as i believe this can be a problem.
Other than that, i'm stuck with £££ rolling round in my brain!

Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated as i'm at a loose end now!

Well, welcome to the forum. I am not going to be able to help you, as I have no Renault knowledge, but others on the forum will. It might take time, but we will get you there.

Hi

Ignor the air in the clear fuel line to the filter canister, they all do that, its just an air bubble that always stays in the filter but floats up the pipe when there is no fuel flow.
Check the injector loom that runs over the top of the engine, especial on the injector plugs although this usually just gives an internittant misfire.
Yours doesnt sound at all bad, my 04 plate with 90k full history and 1 owner prev has had 2 new injectors, a turbo, front wheel bearings, new tensioner pully, alarm ecu and head gasket so far this year, oh and its in the garage again now as the re furbished injectors put in 3 weeks ago have failed and its pouring so much fuel in the thing is misfiring and belching black smoke at any engine speed/ load.

So far had a brand new head, gearbox, alternator, power steering pump, 3 aux idler pulleys then head gasket, turbo, 2 new injectors, 9!!!! SETS OF INJECTOR SEALS, alll injectors re conditioned, alarm ecu, central locking packed up, all wheel bearings, injector loom, handbrake cables (both) two rear callipers along with some stuff i forget. Some say they are great, some say they are far from great but its trying my patience, in fact if it was a dog you would of shot it by now.

Anyway, yes mine did have the same symptoms as yours, it was a wiring issue, as the engine moved on its rather soft and floppy engine mounts it was flexing the loom and loosing power to the fuel cutoff solonoid, later the loom broke down further and injectors started dropping out randomly, sometimes 1, sometimes 2 would stop firing Mine has the 2.5 DCI but it should be similar.

My vans the same as yours, ex-british gas 2.2 dci and had exactly the same symptoms a year or so back. Has yours thrown up an engine management light ? Mine turned out to be a leaking injector and once replaced has been fine since. That is until last week when i also changed my fuel filter but that's another story !

Thank you for the swift replies!

Deanxm, I will try going through the loom to find any break. I did try a bit back but all looked ok?! There was no chafing on the wires and there looked to be no tight spots.

Viz, its wierd as sometimes it will behave and other time (like today) it has cut out loads on me! The 'STOP' and Engine lights are both on continuously at the moment. I shall ask the garage to perform a leak-back check and see if this flags up anything! My problem is i bought the van (as i was told not to bother with a transit as they are rusty and engines are just as bad) to transport my race bike and ever since i got it, it just feels like ive been constantly sending it in!
Should i think twice about replacing the lift pump?

There will be no visable 'breaks' in the wires, they fracture inside the sheeth due to constant vibration, with the engine running you may find by moving the loom you will get the engine to cut out, its worth a go.
If your getting an EML coming on get it back to the garage and get them to look at it again.

I will give that a try this week. It ran all the way to eccles as sweet as a nut before, then cut out 3 times on the way back haha.

The race bike Viz is a 1996 CBR 600 F3 Steel frame.
