That was my understanding too Jim.... service.citroen lists (only) multilayer spheres for hydractive cars, but not for standard cars. IIRC they started painting later spheres grey rather than green. If you could get a part number off the dealer, we could check what service.citroen says.
Actually my 2 year old IFHS spheres for Xantia 1999 HDI Estate seemed to closer to a "normal" car and I was not very happy about this. I am thinking of changing within next 6 months. Thats why I just went to enquire about what citroen has to offer.
The guy at the dealer did not understand what is multilayer, but told me that their spheres last much longer than aftermarket ones, sometimes even 7-8 years (dont know if it is true since these dont seem to be multilayered). But this got me interested. So I asked him just to show me a sample of what spheres they are selling, so he bought this one just to show. This is not the exact sphere that I need to replace.
These days Lizzarte spheres can be bought for 25-30 euros. So my question was based on your experiences if Eurorepar spheres do actually last longer than IFHS, Lizzarte?
I dont seem to be finding the multilayer spheres anywhere!
Just remember that Citroen do not make spheres - they buy them in from suppliers in the same way as they do with many other car components - you pays your money and you makes your choice. Citroen CX 2.5 diesel owners may remember the engine blocks that Citroen sourced from India that turned out to be porous - having the Citroen stamp on it does not always mean top quality. Regardless of who the supplier might be it does seem to be a bit of a lottery sometimes when actual charge pressures are substantially lower than specification. Personally I have happily used sets of GSF / Amtex Comfort spheres on my XM and swap/re-charge them every 2/3 years.
Regarding the grey paint colour used on current Citroen spheres I believe this change was only made in order to be consistent with the pressurised gas container colour coding standards.
The three dimpled spheres with the multilayer diaphragms were used to a limited extent on late model 'guinea-pig' XMs (including mine)and Xantias prior to the introduction of the new saucer type multilayer spheres on the C5.
