Xantia Activa air-con questions and retro-fit?

Post by wurlycorner »

Hi,

I'm currently in the middle of a rad/intercooler change on my Activa turbo. It's been in the back of my mind for many years to retro-fit air con to the car (black car, black interior does = hot in summer!) and clearly as I have the whole front of the car stripped down atm, this would seem the logical time to fit the condenser, if nothing else yet...

So I've been looking around to see what bits are available and having a read on here to find out what I can about general info on the system, but I still have some basic questions atm, if people can please bear with me.

It looks like there are various different manufacturers of the components and I think I've seen at least 2 different designs of condensors and read that there are 2 different types of connectors in use?

So question number 1, can someone please give me a brief run down on any differences in types of systems fitted, what bits are/are not interchangeable between them.

Question number 2 are there any pro's/con's about the different types of systems? I.e. is there one I should try and get because it's more efficient, more reliable, bigger supply of parts etc.

Question number 3, has anyone else out there done what I'm trying to do, out of interest?

Question number 4 (lastly) is there anyone near me that's breaking a Xantia with air con, that I could come and remove so I have all the bits :D

Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Just to say, I'm planning on getting the intercooler/rad back into the car this coming weekend (5/6th April) so would be great to get this wrapped up by then if poss please! ;) :-D

Activa's came without A/C? I did not know that.

Yes, the earlier ones did Xac. I had one myself which had aircon on an R-plate, and was the sometime custodian of another, on an N-Plate, which did not have aircon.

Yep, they clearly do come 'sans' A/C and some of us have to slum it! Sunroofs is as luxurious as we go.

So is any of the A/C system on Activa's unique to Activa's, or can it be robbed from other models and cobbled together?

I’ve got a pdf file with all sorts of service information in it including Xantia aircon. It shows nothing significantly different about the Activa. The system looks similar to general car aircon installations.
If you want a copy pm me and I’ll email you one.

It seems to me that retrofitting air con is a long involved job. The main “lumps”, compressor, condenser, evaporator etc are probably the easiest to deal with although I suspect that the evaporator is a fascia out job.
What might be tricky is sourcing good connecting pipework and the rest of the electrical and electronic parts to complete the job. I think all Xantias with aircon has the small air temperature-sensing unit built into the dash as well.

Best of luck.

Excellent, thank you, will pm you my e-mail address.

Yes I wouldn't be tackling this if I didn't have to basically take the dash/heater box out anyway (leaking matrix and to fit stereo steering wheel remote control adapter) so again, I'm basically gonna be halfway there - might as well go the whole hog! :D
