Dpf warning

Unread post by dowen »

My 2006 C5 2ltr Hdi runs extremly well, 65k on clock. However for the last 10000 miles, about once a month the depolution warning has been coming on for a few miles and then going off!
A week ago it came on and stopped on!
Ive made some calls about having the filter removed, there seems to be an issue with MOT, but the people doing the work assure me the filter is removed from within, and there is no way an MOT inspection would know! Can anyone give me advice on that?
The car does long motorway miles almost daily, so its not a question of just blasting it out!
Is filter removal my best course of action? Im worried about it going limp, (the car) I dare not take to Citroen, It would be life changing money!
Does anyone know an indi in or around the Birmingham area?

Cheers Dave.

There is a recommended garages and services thread here and an accompanying map.
Nearest listed is in Wolverhampton so if anyone has a recommendation it will be a useful addition.
Especially as that one appears to be a diesel specialist, rather than general repairs.

Have a chat with Lighty, might be something simple as the fuel filter or otherwise DPF unrelated, like an EGR solenoid valve.

I wouldn't personally have it removed........just found this.......looks like an automatic failure to not have one if the vehicle originally had one...

I believr that the technique is to remove the innards of it and remap so the car doesn't use it. It's still physically there and visible to the MOT tester, so no issue.

It might not be the DPF at all of course - the light is generic engine management fault. In fact I would probably go so far as to say this probably isn't the DPF, as that usually pulls up a more specific message, eg filter blocking, additive low etc.

Only just been added into the MOT - a smart tester would pick up if the innards had been removed - when it's working the tailpipe is virtually spotless. I doubt they are going to go that far. Yet.... :-D

And how would they know :?: It's not a modification, it's a repair in my view so doesn't need to be declared. But if you want to declare this, it would be interesting to hear what the insurance company make of it, they probably wouldn't have a clue as to what it is & what it does :-D

As far as i'm aware, the MOT tester has to check that the DPF is present, the exact same as a Catalytic Convertor. They aren't allowed to take your car to bits to prove whether there is anything inside the device or not. Eventually they may cotton onto this & may be allowed to give the offending parts a tap & if it sounds hollowd out, then they may be able to fail the car, but at the moment they aren't allowed to do this.

When i spoke to Lighty, he said that they make some holes inside the DPF, so that it doesn't get blocked by the fine mesh, so in the future if an mot tester gave it a whack, it would sound fine & would deffo pass :-D

It's a modification, pure and simple. As from February 2014, it will be illegal to remove it. No doubt any registered garage carrying out removal will be told to stop. When it comes to climate change, it's a bigger crime than murder! Insurance companies are of course, well known for paying out cash when they can avoid it. Irrespective of what anyone thinks, if you remove the DPF , the car has been modified. The law may take a while to cotton on to the bypasses, but they will, and the garage and the driver will be equally guilty. Nobody wants to lose their MOT cert as it's a lucrative business (so says the guy who tested the wifes Clio last week), so eventually they will comply. I'm sure we'd all like to think we could get away with this for ever, but for me, it's not worth the risk of getting caught.

Where has anyone said the DPF would/has been removed?

What is a "registered garage"?

The great fears of things, that people are too cowardly to think through in a logical fashion.

I've wasted fifteen years on car forums and am yet to hear of a single case where an insurance claim was declined due to undeclared modifications. Not one. So I rate this fear as unfounded.

It's a reality that the DPF systems are not suited to many typical real-world uses of the cars they're fitted to. This is the fault of makers who dropped an unrefined product into an unsuitable environment, not owners. Why don't the cowards push back against Government instead of spreading worry?

The internet should be bringing light, concordance and opportunity - not becoming the Black Forest of a communications ether.
