Rain and puncture fun.

Post by Northern_Mike »

Quite typically, after posting about needing a boat in the thread about the knocking front end on the Berlingo, I had a blow-out at 45mph, total destruction of the front right tyre, wheel trim chasing me down the road in the mirror as it flew off the time ( On the A329M bridge going through Hurst, towards DInton pastures for HellRazor's info ) ...

Of course, as is it was only a short trip I was doing to pick some kids up, I had no coat with me. So, changing a wheel in the pissing rain was my afternoon's entertainment. It became apparent that whoever had the wheel off last - likely the garage on Monday, tightened them *way* tight. Last time I had them off was to do the discs and pads and I did them by hand.

If the tyre wasn't fully destroyed it is now. As soon as I saw the state of it where I'd stopped, I guessed it wasn't repairable and drove about 1/3 mile slowly on it to get to a safe place where I could do the wheel change. Thankfully near a friend's house, so wifey and kids could go inside while I got cold and wet changing the wheel.

I guess I'll find out tomorrow if those C5 wheels and tyres fit ok.

I bought 4 good tyres for the Berlingo about 15 months ago. As of today, the status of those tyres is :

Right front - blow out, destroyed (today) about half worn.
Left front - 3 puncture repairs, all nails and screws - destroyed
Left Rear - 2 puncture repairs, then death with a screw in the sidewall
Right Rear - Still there, unworn.

So, out of 4 new tyres, roads destroyed 3 of them. Note, I haven't hit anything with any of them. Nails, and today I have no idea what caused it. It just went bang going straight, and I saw the wheel trim flying off into the trees.

Not a happy bunny really. I'm damned if I'm putting 4 brand new tyres on it again, so hopefully the C5 195/65/15s will fit without rubbing or poking out the arches, as it's got very good tyres on it. The C5 can have the ropey old rubbish that's now on the Berlingo!

OOW!!! Still, it goes to show how stable Bertie is even on three wheels! You going back to look for that trim?

I think the tyres are the right size (as the tyres on my company 13reg Pug Partner van uses that size). I cannot promise the rims will fit though.

Once I'd got it back on all 4 wheels again, I went back and located the trim in the trees by the entrance to Dinton. It had gone a fair way seeing as the tyre deflated at the top of the bridge.

Interesting to know that about the tyres, thanks :-) The rims are 15", same as the Berlingo, the PCD is the same, the centre bore is the same and the offset is 1mm more, so I'm hoping they'll just squeeze under there. It'll look a bit Tonka Toy ish, but it should drive much better. I just hope it doesn't rain for 1/2 hour to let me do it.

Do you know of an auto-electrician around here James (for the DRK, not the Berlingo, very, very simple electrics). I want to get the indicators fixed and I just can't get in it outside because of the rain.

I'm not sure. I do know an MoT tester who used to run Lucas Autocenters (on the Basingstoke Road, near to what used to be the "Four Horseshoes" public house), and used to be an airframe fitter in the RAF. I could ask him if you want. He lives opposite Gillettes in Reading.

is there a slight chance the blown out tyre was causing you knocking :? :? , i cant imagine why or how but stranger things have happened,

also i think the C5 rims are 5 stud were as the BLING GO are 4,
