Renewing tax at the post office

Post by Xaccers »

Do you still need to take the MoT result sheet along with you to renew road tax at the post office now it's all on-line?

Yes as far as I know.

I actually asked them last year about this, saying I was surprised I needed to take MOT or insurance docs with me as the law can tell but she said that they are not linked to it.

Off topic: Now tax discs are going ( ! ) I wonder if we'll get an MOT disc to replace it, I think I'd prefer that anyway personally...

Didn't even realise you could still get a tax disc from a post office.

Always get my tax discs from my local PO, and they always have a look at the MoT and insurance certificate. I guess things will change once the physical tax disc is no longer required.

Local PO is easy for me, plus it's putting a little business their way. I always renewed my TV licence at same PO, until the government decided to take the business away from them. No wonder some POs struggle to survive.

The last two times I have taxed cars, both quite recently, the guy at the PO did not look at the mot, and I do not have a printed certificate of insurance for either car, he gave a quick glance at my phone and then gave me the tax. He said its all in the computer. My ex works in a different PO and she said that the only time they need paper docs is when car is not registered in the same name as the insurance, they need the v5 or v5c along with it.

Well since it has been available online, and over the phone now for a while now, I have switched to that way of doing it for many years now, and find it much more useful, and an easier way of dealing with it.

Yes they do charge for the service, but the £2.50 extra they charge for this, has to be weighed up against having to drive there to attend to it, fuel cost, costing your own time, and the parking charge.

Doing it on the phone saves the hassle of going to the p/office, and it is printed onto the disc, not handwritten like the post office one, which is prone to fading in the sun, or being not very clear due to the poor handwriting of the clerk.

When did they start charging for renewing online?
I always do this, have since the scheme began and have never been charged for it.

Prior to that I used to post it to the local DVLA office, just to avoid the queues in the post office.

Ah O.K. sorry the charge relates to using a credit card on the system I.E. on the phone, or at the post office.

If a debit card is used there is no extra cost, so the same would also apply online.

Does anyone know if, when they bring in monthly payment, it will be possible to buy just one month's tax?
Could be handy if swapping cars around regularly.
