Delphi brand Parts - Hit or Miss?

I met a French girl in Brussels that worked for Delphi in France.
She spoke excellent English (fortunately) and said she had had to learn it to communicate with their American head office. They were part of GM and being spun off as a separate entity at the time (as they were up to their ears in debt).

Is that the same Delphi that makes junk electric power steering for Fiat, Citroen and Mini and other manufacturers?? The same delphi that if torque sensors chuck their toys out of the pram, it costs around 600 notes for new column---Fiat can get the bits, the bloke on the street can't.
I have heard it said that electric power steering was used on cars to make them more economical--one less pump to be driven by engine, then they hang a air con pump on instead. Yeah, right. Of little use in UK at the moment, as indeed most of the year, most years.
A lot of people in this forum know of my hate of unnecessary electrical crud, - some call it progress, I call it way over the top.
Whilst waiting for counter staff in local Citroen stealers to show a pulse and get my son's ordered part, I looked inside a new C4 Picasso Exclusive---apparently it has an automatic handbrake- ie, no handbrake lever to yank up. WHY ??? Plus all the other stuff fitted to the car.
Better get myself an A40 . I was going to put Moggy Minor, but it is a bit of hassle in getting master brake cylinder out, but nothing electrical anywhere near it, lol.

The best and most reliable car I had was the Prius T Spirit. The only maintenance I 'had' to do was clean the front pads because they started squeaking. Worst car was probably a Cortina Mk2.

Why an electric handbrake? I'm guessing so that it doesn't take room up in the cab, applies itself when the engine is turned off and releases itself when you pull away, at least that's what it's like on the Scenic.
