air pump

Unread post by nod »

Hi,
just had the car back from the citroen dealer after a service 2003 c5 petrol auto. they told me the air pump is broken and that is why the anti pollution light is on, they quoted me around 430 pounds 4300dkkr to fix it ,what does the air pump do ? can I do any harm to the car to use it a little in this condition? and is it something I can fix myself? where is it?

Hi nod,

I never heard that there is an Air Pump in C5 :? I have no idea abou it but I found this item in ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-C4-C5 ... 35c079f46c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anti pollution error might be a fuel/ignition/exhaust related problem. For example lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) gets high readings and generates an Anti pollution error. Of course there might be other reasons or a chain of reasons to cause this error.

I would suggest to start with a Lexia session for error code reading.

PS: I guess you're located in DK, did you try Google search in DK or S Citroen forums? There are also a lot of similar cases in FCF.

I did an e-bay search, and while I got a lot of hits for air con pump, I did find air suspension pump, and a petrol secondary air pump (!!);

Sorry, but no. I have no experience of the C5. All I did was an e-bay search to see what came up.

I have wondered about this.

In the fusebox in the engine bay, there is mention of an air pump fuse.

While the engine temperature is cold, it pumps air via a solenoid into a port on the gearbox side of the cylinder head. This facilitates catalytic reduction of the exhaust in its overly rich state. The pump is foolishly located on a C5 and it can seize up.

addo, can you describe the location of this air pump, where is it in C5?

It seems that there are several cases on this problem, I found this information where an OBD error code is generated:

"Generic OBD Error Code Details for P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System - What does this mean?
The P0410 code refers to the emissions system. The AIR pump puts air to the exhaust to lower emissions. It takes in outside air and pumps it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust. About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.
Symptoms
Possible symptoms of OBD code P0410
Possibly symptoms include: MIL illumination obviously Hesitation on acceleration Noise from a bad/stuck AIR pump "

It's on the left side, down low mounted to the frame rail beside the radiator. Near where your Xantia had its horns. Lexia sometimes calls the failure an EGR fault.
