Someone possibly started using it for the only good use it has - in the smallest room...

I'm surprised it doesn't come ready-perforated...

Despite being called the Book of Lies, I wouldn't be without it. Part of the problem is it doesn't cover variants of a model very well, and can be misleading in the detail thereof. Before I found this forum, all I had was decades of car DIY knowledge, & Haynes. In the past, Haynes was probably useful and quite accurate, but has been unable to keep up as cars have become much more complex. Add to this the fact that we don't want to pay too much for a car manual, so it has had to be produced down to a price

Haynes admit they've dumbed down, it's on a page on their website.
Basically their old useful workshop books that were based on a complete strip down of a car used to be scary to those who just want to know how to check the oil without having to take it to a garage (just as long as they don't have to get mucky or break a nail), and so their books became service and repair manuals, which are easier to produce as they don't have to spend so much time stripping cars down.
It would be nice if they provided the old style workshop books in electronic format to keep their costs down, and even if they charged considerably more for them, they'd be a heck of a lot more useful than the books they now produce.

I was given one from my brother after he'd used it for his first year of Mini ownership! By the end of my first year of mini ownership Poor book was in pieces! (in '95)
Had one for the 309 gti too, but coming from a mini that scared me a bit mechanically! Same with the Bx at first!

With the current level of knowledge available online (here being a great example!) now, the haynes aren't used so much, i'll admit, searching or asking on here is easier than working out what the BOL is suggesting! ;-)

That could be the irony of it, with Haynes dumbing down, the information DIY mechanics need isn't available so forums have sprung up to fill the gap meaning that fewer people need to buy their current publications that would have otherwise.

I guess that in the past, Haynes' mechanics were able to deduce much of the necessary information themselves through experience and inspection, and that a call to the manufacturers would fill in any gaps in many cases.
These days, the increased complexity of vehicles, together with their reliance on software makes that impossible, and manufacturers appear to be deliberately obstructive.
Haynes used to be like having a mate to whom one could say 'You've had one of these apart before, what do I need to look out for?'.
