What (front) tyres shall I put on my C5?

Front ones are currently Michelin Primacy, 255/55 R17.

What would you put on? Willing to pay up to £170.

One of my cars had Goodyear Efficientgrips. I really liked them, they gave a good ride, were quiet and had very good grip in the wet. Wear on Michelins is better but I would buy the Goodyears again.

If you're happy with the Primacy then why not get those again? I think there are better tyres as the Primacy doesn't offer the best ride.

No, I meant £170 for one. I came up with that figure as I knew that the Primacy (and now the Goodyear) were about £150 each.

I've seen some priced around £60, names I've never heard of, and I don't think that's what I want. I'd sooner pay more for a good or very good quality tyre (but not the £400 I once had to fork out for ONE tyre on my old Nissan Navara!).

As a general comment, one often sees a report/comment where someone's fitted XYZ tyre, and reports that the new tyre's much quieter. Makes me wonder if the old tyre that was replaced was just as quiet when new, but noisier since it's become well worn and the rubber's hardened a bit with age.

In similar vein, I wonder whether the noise rating on all new tyres is consistent through the life of a tyre as it wears & ages

Try http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk for a great price fitted at a local tyre specialist. I've used them for years and never been disappointed with their prices/service. If you want decent tyres at a bargain price look at the Barum Bravuris tyre, its Continentals budget range, i've used them on a 9-5, Vel satis and now my C5 with great results.
