Peugeot 106 diesel clutch

Unread post by ohms »

Hi all,

I have a very low mileage 97 106 diesel which has had a heavy clutch, which judders and was very fearce in taking up drive. Eventually it got to the point where it had started to drag and was becoming undrivable.

It needed a new clutch and so today it went into a clutch specialist fast fit centre for a 3 piece clutch replacment.

I asked what clutch would be fitted and was informed either an LUK or valeo item.

Picked the car up this afternoon and was informed that the clutch would still be quite heavy because it's a diesel. TBH I had been looking forward to the lightness of a new clutch. I know when my xantia had a replacment clutch, cable and clip it was beautiful to drive afterwards.

So off I went, paid the man and didn't even get a mile before I noticed that although the judder and fierceness had gone, the clutch was still very heavy, atleast as heavy as before replacement and now the release bearing makes a noise when the clutch is up and sat idling. It disappears when it's pressed but release it and you can hear it again...It didn't do this before. Oh yes, and it's still dragging, but nowhere nearly as bad. You can get gears now, but it's anything but smooth and still notchy.

My questions are, should the 106 1.5d have a light action clutch following replacement or are they always heavy, and what could be causing the noise?

Also, it still has the original self adjusting cable and I wondered if replacing this might improve matters with the notchiness

Thoughts and opinions appreciated, but I'm anything but satisfied with the job.

Thanks in advance.

all the clutch's i have replaced have become light/er than before, sounds to me as they either have not fitted a full kit, or no new bits at all :yikes:  ,

the other possibility ( although you still have a noisy thrust bearing ) is they fitted the likes of a Borg and Beck kit, as i have found this brand to be heavy in operation from new,

whatever they did it sound like a case of not fit for purpose so i would be going straight back with to have a chat!!!

Thanks Malcolm.

I called today and spoke to the manager who said it must be the gearbox input shaft bearing that have gone.

Didn't make a noise until they'd 'fixed' the clutch. It's going back tomorrow and will see what they say.

If the input bearing is noisy I hope they re-filled the gear box with oil ???? It would have been wise to fit a new cable as well?
The 106 and other Pug clutches just get heavier and heavier with age and after replacing with a O/E Valio kit should make it lighter and much better.I bet they fitted a cheepo recon kit.? I fitted one of these to our workshop 306D,total waste of money,a quality O/E kit was fitted within a year.

I have two 106 diesels, both 1998, one a 3-door and the other an XA Van.
Both have had clutches fitted by me in the last couple of years and I can confirm the pedal operation is still very light and smooth in both cases. They should not be heavy, this bends and eventually brakes the arm on the top of the gearbox.
The input shaft bearings are almost always noisy on this application, I'm not sure why; the 3-door has done 170k on the original 'box and rattles badly until the clutch is depressed- but has done 70,000 miles like this with no ill effects.. The van has just done 100k and the rattle is there too (albeit not as loudly).
One has a cheapo 'Veco' clutch, the other is a Valeo type. Neither are heavy, both rattle and both show no signs of imminent failure- I wonder if they have kinked your cable or the pedal needs lubrication?
