I see that Intel are opening up to the idea of other operating systems including Android.

Upgraded the main laptop to Mint "Petra" RC. Appears to be fine up to now, only bug identified is the menu text appears a bit scrambled occasionally.

They need to as that heap of pox that Microsoft now peddle called Windows 8 is sure to kill them. I bought dad a new laptop the other day as he specifically wanted Win 8.

It is horrible in the extreme. What were they thinking or smoking when they came out with that one? It is totally counter-intuitive and the apps are awful. Outlook appears to have been designed by and for a five year old.

Microsoft have really buggered up big time and I fully expect Windows 9 to be released very soon to correct the glaring errors. Win 8 is ME and Vista all over again but an order of magnitude worse.

For now I’ll be sticking with Ubuntu 13. Against Win 8 it is a masterpiece...

Microsoft should have called it quits when they gave up on Windows Mobile 6.5, their last decent mobile OS.
Instead they should develop their apps for Android, iOS and Linux.

It's such a shame as MS were at the forefront of mobile technology but they just didn't have the vision. They had a music player app that could stream as well so they could have beaten iTunes, they had a decent ebook reader so they could have beaten Amazon with Kindle.
Instead they viewed it as something they did on the side and left any enhancement to the hardware developers, such as HTC with the XDA.
After giving their blessings to the ROM chefs on XDA Developers forum, they should have monitored it and acquired the additional features they were adding, then worked with HTC to develop a top notch product with a finger friendly interface and been ahead of the game.

Microsoft should have remained with Windows 7. Their best achievement to date and what's proved to be a good all-round tool. Why couldn’t they have just gently developed that in incremental steps and not gone for something totally odd, bizarre and strange?

I dread having to battle with Server 2012. It's coming and I'm not looking forward to it at all...

I just wiped W7 from my last machine yesterday (I thought).
Found another Toshiba laptop with a severely neglected XP on it shortly after (was gathering tools to fix the car blower).
Wasted hours on it today. Ubuntu looms large!

Indeed it does :-D The answer to every computer problem.

Dad now wants a Win 7 machine and has offered me the Win 8 laptop... It'll be wiped and have Ubuntu installed if that happens...

First though I'm going to let dad have a look at Ubuntu and see what he thinks of it...

You'll be pleased with the replacement for 2012 though, apparently it's all done via powershell.

Try Linux Mint Jim, I've been using the 16 RC since yesterday and it is looking good and more Windows - like than Ubuntu.
Only bug I have encountered is an inability to install other users - need a profile for my grandson and one for my daughter as she has an online interview with a major disaster relief agency sometime soon.

Good :-D I'll be even happier when Microsoft appreciate that Unix is the only sensible OS for servers and give up on Windows for servers...

Well apart from the Unix time deadline (Y2K38), there's the major issue that when something goes wrong with a Unix server, then SOMETHING has gone wrong. Whereas with a Microsoft server, you can usually just reboot and it sorts itself out ;)

I've visited the dark side...

I have acquired a brand-new Windows 8 laptop. First new laptop I've ever owned. I could not quite do the deed and wipe it for Ubuntu and as I need to get familiar with Win 8 for professional reasons I've been spending some time with it.

First impressions was one of horror. What a pile of rubbish. I persevered and learned the basics of what is an entirely new way of working. I guess it's like the move from Win3.1 to Win95 was...

Anyway, after installing Firefox and PuTTY it got a little better but I was still far from happy. Going back to Ubuntu was like going home to a lovely comfy place. Win8 was a hair-shirt in comparison.

Last evening I updated to Win8.1. It's better and just on the verge of tolerable now. I'll keep going with it for professional reasons but still hate it.

I have a copy of Office 365 installed (a freebie!) and now have the Ubuntu One client installed so I can get to my Ubuntu cloud from it.

Things I do like are the clean and simple Metro email client and the web browser. Office is nice and clean-looking too. I like that.

Going to Ubuntu, which I do for all advanced things, is still like going to a lovely place.

In car terms Ubuntu=XM Win8.1=Vauxhall Ashtray

I'm not converted. Ubuntu stays as the choice OS. Windows has a lot to do to convince me to change wholesale.

Hopefully Win9 will be better. Perhaps Win 8 is like Win ME, 98 and Vista, the former duff versions..

Jim you are being very unkind to Poxhaul Ashtrays with that comparison!
So far on server 2012 I've found the easiest way to get to all programs is to do windows key + F and then click on applications.
Come back Bill Gates, all is forgiven, please return and give us a decent GUI
