Hi Alistair, you use an aircon disconnect tool which is a wraparound thing with pin hinging on one side. You clip it around the pipe and push/wiggle it into the joint to release the garter spring. Then you just use almighty force to overcome the stuck O-rings. The tools come in a kit, colour coded for different pipe OD's.
