Megane 1.4 2002, Banging and shouldering in gear?

Our 2002 megane 1.4 petrol parked up fine (1/2 on/off the kerb) when we returned 1/2 hour later and tried to set off, the car moved forward for about a yard then there was a horrible noise from the engine area and the car stopped moving as though it had caught on something (shaking the engine etc as it stopped). It was as though it had scrapped or caught on something but nothing was under the car. On closer inspection the engine seemed to have lots of movement and the bottom gearbox 'dog bone' mount had play, so I replaced it with new which stopped the engine rocking however the problem is still there. Setting off in either forward or reverse causes the car to make a loud noise and stop suddenly moving the wheels in the arches and shaking the engine ?
The car free wheels ok, the problem is just in gear, however the gears engage easily.
Any ideas, I have tried to check the drive shafts/ CV joints but can't find anything obvious ?

It is a strip out job by sounds of it. CV joint seized, diff or bearing, maybe gearbox or clutch.
Start from outside in.
