Xantia TD rough idle

Unread post by cc101 »

Hi all hope your all well. Last few days the xant has had a few issues when left over night or when the engines cooled down, it starts on the button but idles very rough and lots of grey smoke, idle and smoke resumes to normal after 15 seconds or so! Renewed leak off pipes and blanking plug but still the same, suspected glow plugs but it starts just as normal, also sounds like it's running on 3 for the 15 seconds or so then fine.

If you start it from warm it's absolutely fine! Any ideas guys?

Cheers, Chris.

glow plug/s,

one down it would start fine and be a little lumpy, two down a bit more lumpy, three down probably have a real job to start, four down almost certainly wont start

Not always the case, Malc.

I had an issue on my old S1 which used ti idle smooth then started never idling smooth from cold start. Fitted new glow plugs and it didn't resolve. 145k.

New S1 is same but only 61k miles. NO engine wear and runs divine. Not changed plugs yet.

Hi all, just a quick update, whipped the multimeter out and it was the last glowplug (flywheel end) which was playing up, found one in the shed, fitted, problem sorted.

Cheers.

That's excellent news.

Please can you confirm EXACTLY how you identified the problem with a multimeter? This has been the subject of discussion before on the forum with talks about using shunts and the like to measure amperage draw which is not really useful for the average motorist.

Hopefully, I will be able to swap mine out today. As I said before, I did all on the S2 and it made no difference and I am not sure many people on the forum with S1 cars relish the task of extracting the one behind the diesel pump!
