Re: crashes
There would be less accidents If only more people stopped tailgating.

Re: crashes
Pretty horrific video clip. The highway code says if the following car is too close then leave a bigger gap in front of you.

Re: crashes
HGV's seem to sometimes follow each other alarmingly close though generally on main A roads etc.

Re: crashes
If anyone 'tailgates' me i will always try to maintain the speed i was allreading doing, I will not slow down in order to irritate the users of the road furthermore, if they wish to pass me, at what ever speed on what ever type of road then they can do so when i have a suitably safe point, if you cant control your emotions behind the wheel of a car i have less faith in you being able to control the car.
Music keeps me going.

Re: crashes
Tail gate hero ??....I thought that's what screen washers were for ....a really long pull and a good spray and they drop back...if not a second dose makes the point....well it works most of the time

Re: crashes
Pretty awful really, though its what I would expect given that the back of a lorry is not the most well designed bit of kit in terms of safety.

Re: crashes
Another reason for having a higher vehicle anyway
Thing is for such incidents you dont even have to be tailgating for that to occur
An automated following system for cars would be the way forward and will likely follow with the rise in Adaptive Cruise Control systems being installed in new cars

Well, really you do!KP wrote:

How can you crash into the back of something if you have left yourself more than enough room to come to a stop?
Leaving enough room and take into account road conditions, stay alert and that can be avoided.
If someone is following you too closely then just leave an even bigger gap infront to allow more space for you to slow down, allowing for the idiot behind.
Its not difficult.
These systems which allow the car to brake if a crash is likely is a good thing, clearly. However also very worrying as there are far too many people who will rely upon this system. Again adding to the safety feeling in the car and maybe making people take even more risks as they think their car will look after them.
I wonder how carefully we would drive if we removed the airbags and had a big spike sticking out of the steering wheel.

Re: crashes
Quite easily if it's drizziling, you're on a French autoroute in a low-slung car overtaking a lorry which pulls out when you are slightly more than level with it. He just didn't see me.Citroenmad wrote:Well, really you do!KP wrote:

That was in the DRK. It has no ABS and it had stone cold drum brakes all round. We hit the guard rail (the thing that stops motorbikes going under the rear) on the back of the lorry at about 65mph. Fortunately he was still doing about 60 so we got away with a little bit of bent bumper and a dislodged AA badge.
Don't presume just because you're driving sensibly that some other cretin won't do something completely stupid.

Re: crashes
First time I ever heard my Father swear bad and with great emphasis, during my second driving lesson........."Alasdair, all those other Fu@@ers are idiots and every one of them is trying to F@@@ing Kill you so drive with that in mind".....Don't presume just because you're driving sensibly that some other cretin won't do something completely stupid.
I remembered that one.
