So Many Problems

Unread post by Aircooled »

Hi Guys, I would dearly like to keep my 53 plate C5 2.2 HDI Saloon, but it has I,m afraid been sorely neglected in the past (previous owners) I have had it 18 months now and had 2 full services carried out and also the diesel additive refilled. I have here a list of problems if any kind person out there can help me to a fix on any of them I would be truly beholden :)

1: The diesel particulate filter needs changing, I have been told it is possible to remove it, jet wash it and refit it instead of paying silly money for a new one, is this possible? Is it advisable?
2: The dreaded Anti Pollution Fault/ESP ASR not functioning warning which sends it straight into "limp mode" this is probably connected to the Particulate filter needing changing? This warning fills me with dread, cos every time it appears it is followed by limp mode, no power, I could run uphill quicker! :P
3: On the subject of warning messages, I have had the Diesel additive refilled but the warning still appears, the same goes for the unblock diesel filter warning, both were done on last service 6 months ago but have been appearing again for the last 4 months, also when I switch the wipers on and the message "automatic wiper mode" is displayed, it is followed hard on its heels by Diesel additive and unblock diesel filter warnings.
4: I was recovered not long back by the AA, one of the injector seals were "chuffing" I have bought new seals and managed to change 2 cylinders but the other 2 (of which one was the culprit) will NOT come out, the first 2 were in out and changed in 10 mins but the other 2 won,t budge, soaked them overnight on WD40 which did nowt.
5: Radio has a mind of it`s own, switches itself on even when no key in ignition WTF?

Fairly extensive list I know, any help tips appreciated, I like the car, lovely to drive and for a 2.2 pretty good on fuel but, slowly but surely the problems are starting to get to me
I,m having the cam belts and water pump done next week as it has now 100k down, cam belts and water pump for approx. £350 with 12 months parts and labour guarantee, is that reasonable(Citroen recommended dealer). it`s getting so I don`t want drive it any more. help?

Topping the addtive up is one thing, but was a diagnostic connected to tell the ECU it was added thats the first thing.

The ESP shouldnt put the car into limp mode. I know of another C5 with an ESP fault but its not limpping..

Im not an expert on C5's far from it, ive not owned one but have worked on a couple.

YES the particle filter can be removed and jet washed out safely and re-fitted to the car. Or you can try, with a Lexia a Re-Generation exercise where the Lexia attempts to do a RE-Gen of the filter. Its scarey to watch, and a reccomend it done on a new cam belt too

@citroenxm Thanks for the reply, after the service (Citroen recommended dealer) the warning lights did not appear for a couple of months and then all of a sudden started again :( I have seen on fleabay remapping tools with which you can "disable" FAP/DPF and then have the whole thing removed and Hey Presto no more "limping" or annoying warnings, have you or anyone else experience of this?

Yes, I used my lexia to switch off the ESP in the ECU, this then put the ESP light out ...

Not sure how illegal that is, the owner was happy for the short term so they could get an MOT on their car. Otherwise though, we DO need to fix it.

IM NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD GO AND DISABLE ANY ITEMS!! DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.. NOT ON MY SAY SO... :)

Unfortunally, uncared for 2.2s are not a good buy in the Mk.1 C5s.. for your exact experiances.

The ESP/ASR and DPF/Fap warning lights are not on constantly, they normally come on when I drive a bit more energetically than usual, if I need to clog it to overtake or on a longer journey on motorway etc :? Once I,ve switched off, mostly overnight, they go off, it`s like playing Russian roulette :P drives me bloody mad :x

I took my DPF off and jet washed it, really easy exercise (if you work at a garage and car in the air).

You need to reset the additive counter with a diagnostic computer.

Radio, easy upgrade it.

Injector Seizure is a massive COMMON problem on the 2.2 engines, they either do come out or dont!!

PSA themselfs have scraped many of these because they wont come out... WD40 wont touch the stuff, however, TRY the job when the engine is HOT! and I mean hot.. it softens the stuff up, but wortha go. Might not work though. And if PSA cant get them out of their engines then im not sure if you ever will..

Have you any experience of these MPSS thingys that reprogramme everything allowing you to then remove the bloody DPF Filter? I think I will have to find someone with a garage/pit/ramp and take it off and wash it. :P

Thanks for that, I,ll give it a blast on Monday as I,ve left my tools at work, I thought the injectors would be the least of my problems :( apparently not! ah well, I will wait till I see if I can get them out before I do the cambelts, I,m not paying £350 ish if I can,t get the bloody injectors sorted

There was a company video, on here somewhere I think that showed a special tool for removing those injectors. I haven't time this morning to search for it but it might be worth your while to.

The ABS/ESP fault can be either the brake pedal switch (cheap) or the ABS bloc (dear). A faulty switch can also put the car into limp mode.
