new frount breaks and pads still feel spongye

Post by jacksun1987 »

It might be just me this But today i have a new set of front disc s and pads. When i put my foot on the pedal. Theres still that spongy feeling.
When i lightly put my foot on the break theres seems a delay feeling Have to put my foot harder to get a response from it. Then it kicks in.
Im still use to the bx breaks. They was solid harder feeling. When breaking lighly.

Ohh does any olny know. How much do new seals cost on the frount. Its gone on the drivers side where you jack it up. There theres a small hole. Thats the thing whats wroring me for mot in January

First, what car is it?

I have recently bought a set of front brake seals from Bigg Red for £29, for both sides.

A delay in the brakes is usually caused by air in the lines. Bleed thoroughly.
Have the brakes recently become spongy?

It is not difficult (provided you have the time, tools, and nothing is seized). The following post has (amongst other things) the information on how to bleed the brakes;

I'm guessing Jacksun means sills, rather than seals, being as he mentions "Its gone on the drivers side where you jack it up. theres a small hole".

I reckon bleeding some fresh fluid through the brakes should solve the sponginess problem.

Disc brakes sometimes do feel spongy until the pads bed in because they are not making contact with the discs all over.

Front brakes: I agree with previous posters, the hesitation is air in the front brake lines - bleed until clean LHM flows. Pads may take several hundred miles to bed into well-worn discs.

Hole in sill - if you're not worried about beauty, get a patch welded over the rotten area if it's not too big, grind the welds fairly flat and paint with two or three coats of chip-resistant paint. Finish with a couple of spray coats of the right colour. The texture of the chip resistant helps disguise the patch. Plate and paint cost me less than £20 in June. If you make your own plate, the actual welding shouldn't cost you too much .

yep thanks im rubbish welding any one good on here :)
we bleed 3 of the breaks. Couldnt do the passenger side fount. Because the bleed nipple screw was rounded off. So i need a 7mil spanner or buy another bleed nipple screw. And force the old one off.
Mine are 8 mils screws. Bet everyones are different sizes lol

Before trying to get the rounded bleed nipple off, daily spray it with Plus Gas for a week or so (you can get it from Euro Car Parts). This should soak into the rust and loosen it up, so it should then be easier to remove. Once you have got it turning, I would suggest you replace it. Don't try to force it off, it is likely to shear.

I would be inclined to also grease each bleed nipple threads with copper slip grease, so that they should not seize in future.

Where are you based? There are some people who can weld, but they will need to know where you are first.

the fluid what was in the breaks was the mucky brown fluid i had before i changed the lhm oil.
Its wierd how the bit in the breaks as stayed in there. I would have thought it would have gone round the system. The new green lhm fluid
