Car Transport Trailers
Anyone know about trailers? I'm shopping around for a trailer suitable for taking my Clio backwards and forwards to the track. My old man says get one with suspension. However pondering this, most of the total weight is already suspended by the cars own suspension. This leaves only the unsprung weight of the trailer itself, which won't be huge given it's a small trailer for a small car. Most of the trailers I see at trackside are unsprung. Have I got this right?

Re: Car Transport Trailers
What I mean is the vast majority of small car transporters have no suspension as far as I can see, all fixed axle. It doesn't seem to cause anyone significant issues?

Re: Car Transport Trailers
Have you achieved B+E on your licence? If not, the maximum weight (of loaded trailer AND towing vehicle) you can drive is 3,500KG. However, the weight of the loaded trailer must be less than the un-laden weight of the towing vehicle. I know this as I had to recently tow a trailer, so I looked up to see what I was allowed to do.
Also, check your towing vehicles' handbook on towing trailers. I found that Gracie can tow 680KG un-braked trailers, and 1,200KG braked trailers.

Re: Car Transport Trailers
Unsprung trailer is illegal.... const and use regs:
Springs and resilient material
22.—(1) Save as provided in paragraphs (3) and (4), every motor vehicle and every trailer shall be equipped with suitable and sufficient springs between each wheel and the frame of the vehicle.
Can only think that the suspension is not visible - towing a 500kg unsprung trailer would be, er, interesting!!

Re: Car Transport Trailers
think most trailers have indespension style units fitted, not always easy to see.. seemingly just a rubber block with an axle stuck in.. got them on my boat trailer..
Re: Car Transport Trailers
How light is the clio now as you could get away with a towing dolly or an A frame for it if its under 750kg
Re: Car Transport Trailers
PS if it is over 750kg then you could rig up an extension to the handbrake cable which runs under the car and then can be tied onto the tow hook, thus it becomes braked and fine to tow with an a frame. Then all you need is a cheap set of wheels and tyres to tow it on and a light trolley jack and swap onto your race tyres once at the track. The weight saving alone never mind cost would be more substantial with this method and means a lighter towing setup as well and could be towed by a lot more vehicles as a std clio cup weighs 1070kg-ISH + 500+kg for a trailer and your over the weight limit of most cars. A C5 for example, Hatch or estate 2001-2008 can only tow 1500kgs braked...
