Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
Well, Gracie just FAILED her MOT, due mainly to ignorance. They failed her for a binding NSF brake (fair enough, sorted that one), and 3% efficiency on the rear hand brake. OOPS! Just heading back now with the binding problem resolved, and the Haynes BoL to show them how the handbrakes work!

Take it to a decent MOT station! Drift Road MOT , out towards Binfield. Brilliant...

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
Well the MOT guy had popped out, so I couldn't show him the error at that time. However, he is due back at 13:00, so I had time to sort out the binding issue (somebody had used the wrong grease on the hub handbrake lever and it had turned to glue. Cleaned, and copper slip used there), and I will head back there now. I will (if needed) demonstrate WHY the handbrake operates on the front brakes, not the rear ones.

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
Surely when they enter the car onto their computer system it tells them the pertinent facts about the car such as whether the handbrake is on the front or rear!
They have to look up other facts like the emissions limits (which can be different for different makes and models, even though they typically fall into 2 or 3 categories) whether there are airbags, ABS etc...
Then there's common sense - like checking the front wheels if the handbrake seems to do nothing on the rear... Maybe this thread should be renamed "My garage needs knowledgable help!"
Fingers crossed you don't have any further hassles.

still
i think Gracie is very clever causing her rear brakes to work to 3% when pulling the hand brake lever up
i wouldnt show him the BOL as he had obviously digested that already,
and old GS BOL i had did state if the hand brake lever has to much travel adjust the rear cables

Well, she has passed with no advisories. The second MOT guy was PSA knowledgeable, and popped her onto the rollers, said "nothing wrong there", and signed her off.

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
I was worried the rear handbrake scored 3% efficiency - how did he arrive at that given there isn't one?
Pleased she finally passed fine Alastair Yes indeed. it is an absolute must to find an MOT tester who actually knows what he or she is doing around a hydraulic Citroen...
Sadly they're on the IUCN red list as critically endangered... They could soon be extinct in the wild.

I had an old MOT tester try to check the headlight beams on a BX with the engine off the back end of that particular car would drop rather quickly, he wanted to adjust both headlights until I started the engine for him
BXs since 1993 built 1.9 TZD turbo, got a S2 Xantia estate, brilliant car! 2013, Xantia HDI LX 110 2000 new car with 122,000, l C2 HDI Rusty rocket, C3 Picasso HDI new to me.

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
I think that the 3% efficiency was the rolling road test. If so, the second MoT guy knew about Citroens, and the suspension/rear brakes setup.
I do intend to strip and clean up the front callipers. I will be ordering 2 sets of seals first. Does anybody have a guide to sorting out the callipers, as I don't want to break them?

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
Well, it looks like her alarm is now working properly. I replaced the ultrasonic sensors over a week ago with a pair I bought off a forum member (sorry, but I cannot remember who), and she has not (yet) had a panic attack. However, I still have a few things to get on with, and one I need advise on.
I want to clean up the height corrector linkages. I know (based on what I have read) that they need to be loose and floppy, but what I need to know is a; can they be cleaned in situ (I really don't want to be taking the H/C off Gracie, as I don't have workshop facilities), and b; what do I need to disconnect to allow me to get the levers cleaned up properly? I know to support her properly (I have axle stands), I know roughly where the H/C units are, but that is about it.
Thanks for any forthcoming help.

Re: My Xantia needs knowledgable help!
James,
this thread deals with it pretty comprehensively, apart from the working with them in situ. I can't recall anyone attempting that but as usual could well be wrong.
