Them there vans with a camera in each corner on the roof...

Post by Napoleon »

Seen patrolling around recently.

Are they to detect cars on the road with no road tax, or MoT, or both?

We had them around here a few months ago if not longer and then I noticed them about two weeks ago again too.

I think its just to read the tax disc, you'll note the cameras are in all four corners and the (may) go back up the road again the other way to ensure those parked the 'wrong' way get theirs read too. :) I'd assume it reads the barcode data but I'm not sure. If the disc is outside the swept area, then it may not be too clear.

It would be possible to cross reference and determine no MOT I expect as well. Which reminds me, why do you still *need* to take the MOT (and insurance) when taxing at a post office ? Its all electronic so they should know if its expired. Insurance I can understand as people may cancel but an MOT has a fixed expiry date...

I'm a bit irked (with myself), as I have let the MoT expire a few weeks ago, and while the tax in in force, I still shouldn't have the car on the road.

Needlesstosay I'm anxious not to caught by one of these vans cruising my street, and it will be Tuesday before I can get the MoT done. I'll just have to get the car off the road when I get my van out for work.

I usually put these events in the computer calendar to warn me, but for some reason this time I did not.

Grrr.

(ps, the anxiety comes from the fact that we're off to France on Friday).

I guess it's related to the news which I read on BBC pages recently concerning
the number plate recognition technology used --> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23433138" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yep they are ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) vans. They run all number plates in less than a second checking for road tax, MOT and insurance. There's normally a police check point a couple of hundred yards down the road to pull you in should you not have all 3 requirements.

In my experience of taxing my c5 last week the post office said she didn't need the insurance document, and if your mot is due in the last month and you need to tax your car thy wont let you :(

They're more interested in lack of tax or insurance (technically not having an MoT is supposed to invalidate insurance, this often starts a heated debate), I've heard the usual trick with being caught not having an MoT is to apologise profusely and promise that your next journey will be straight to a testing station, there are conflicting reports but I've heard that if they bother issuing a ticket it's not usually for a great deal. Unless they can find something immediately wrong with your car (e.g. tyres etc.) then you'll have a problem.

Can you tell there's a of a whoopsie...been there...done that...got lucky...won't do it again...vibe going on here?
I shaln't elaborate, but it's bloody hairy.

Well, we're all legit once more here, and it's off to the Eurotunnel in the morning - going to stay one night near Troyes, then down the following day to a campsite near Annecy, Menthon St Bernard or something.

Bye guys.
