Re: Computer operating systems
I just call it 'nix' now as I've heard it called both "line-ooks" and "linoks"
Slight off topic but I still find it odd the way Americans pronounce "integer" too after hearing it, although they might spell it differently I've not checked.

It is almost but not quite Lean-ux.
I heard an American pronounce stalagmite as stal-AG-mite the other day.
I have an American daughter in law. Speaks almost proper

Re: Computer operating systems
I've brushed over page 1 and page 14 of this thread (so as you can tell I've thoroughly taken it all in!), but you do know Jim that you can tell your PC to shut down without installing updates don't you? Certainly can on W7 anyway.. Or you just press shut down and leave it
Also - you can download the service packs as a single file from microsofts website, takes a bit of searching but it's there. So if you have XP you should be able to get all 3 service packs easily enough, with W7 there's one service pack and about 100 more updates afterward, excessive I know but you only do it once if it's done right.

Re: Computer operating systems
Looks like MS are finally starting to admit they've made a mistake with W8, although they're only going as far as W8RT.

They need to wake up, realise that they threw away their lead in the mobile device market years ago, and get back to making software that is easy to use not a PITA.
I really hate server 2012 with the W8 interface.

Re: Computer operating systems
2008R2 is great, it just works alone with Exchange 2010. No user-unfriendly gui to fight with, the powershell for when you want to get your hands dirty, a place for everything and everything in it's place.
I really can't see server 2K12 selling well, not where IT admins have a say anyway. There is no advantage to Metro (just as there isn't with it on phones, tablets, laptops or PCs) over their previous interfaces (heck even Titanium on WM6.5 was much better).

Re: Computer operating systems
Are you softening Xac
Actually had a problem with Linux this week
The Asus laptop (Mint "Olivia") met Colonel Panic on Saturday night (in the library, with a rhubarb)
Not much noticeable other than loss of sound.
Did the usual messing around then booted Win7 to see if it might be an hardware problem.
Sound worked in Windows BUT, very poor screen image, poor sound quality, nightmare to use YouTube. Then the updates started, and continued... and continued...
I put it to one side and read my book instead.
Sunday morning it was still updating - restarting - updating - restarting
Then it crashed altogether.
Booted back into Mint, into the recovery console, it did some system checks and fixed some odds and ends, booted into the normal OS and everything fixed.
Was just using the Toshiba laptop in the kitchen (Ubuntu Raring Ringtail) and that experienced a touch of the Colonel Panics too.
Just shut that down and will look at it later (weekend most likely)
Main computer unaffected but I have a suspicion that it may be linked to a recent update.

Re: Computer operating systems
My laptop now has Windows 8 installed
I am actually quite content with using it over Windows 7. Don't miss the Start Menu like I thought I would. Windows Key + type the program you want and there you go
It's super speedy (most likely due to the SSD I bought at the same time
).
Certainly no complaints so far with it.

I have an Asus EeePC 1015 which I'm being forced to use because my nice shiny Dell Laptop died a smelly motherboard death on me.
Dual boot - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Window 7 Starter.
It runs better with Windows 7.
