Mysterious O-Ring

Unread post by cc101 »

Hi all, does any one know the reasoning for the cap with the O-Ring underneath it on the LHM feed pipe!?

Nope! I've asked this before and no one could come up with any idea why its there, and neither can I.

Its not even any use for priming the pump without disconnecting the hose as if you pour any oil into it it just goes straight into the tank. Its also a liability as an air leak at that o-ring would draw air into the hydraulic pump and lead to harsh ride...

I would expect it's an artefact of manufacture - like a core-plug in an engine.

Possibly impossible to mould it without that hole there...

To be honest, I never knew it was removable...

It could be something that's used on the production line Jim, good thinking. Maybe they have a thing they stick in the hole like a banjo bolt that fills not only the tank but also primes the hose to the pump, so an assembly worker or robot can get the pump primed without manually (and messily) pouring oil down the pipe and attaching the hose clamp! It's certainly not useful AFTER the car has been built, from what I can see...

Just so people reading this thread know what it looks like:

(pay no attention to the clear hose )

Similar redundant? plug exists on the n/s end of my XM 2.1TD plastic inlet manifold.

Presumably if the O-ring hardens with age, it could become a source of air ingress, which we don't want - not going to touch mine !

Yes, I often wondered at its purpose Ken... In my innocence years ago I thought it was something for the XM...
