It's made by Facom, and hence expensive (sixty quid).

Then again, you could break the Kilmarnock car for a few bob, right?

Nope. I think you guys keep forgetting I have no facilities for something like breaking a car. No trailer to collect it (no MOT remember) nowhere to store it, nowhere to work on it.

Besides, how does breaking another car help me remove and refit the fuel pump, I still need the tool to do that right ?

I believe, if you get decent purchase on the lugs, belting it with a 4lb hammer will remove it. Tapping it won't help, it chews the lugs. One decent smack should loosen it. Even better if you can get a friend to help and hit one of the other lugs at the same time.

The other car needs minor welding to the sills, front drop links and P-bushes and a new exhaust. The gearbox and engine are ok. The current owner has had it since it was a year old, and it was a Citroen UK car before that. High miles but well serviced. Sounds like a bargain really.

Its just come at a bad time for us. If we'd been moved in to our own house and I had a garage I would have at least gone to look at the car.

That tank lockring over the pump looks to be identical to the HDI setup according to the pics on Citroen Service.

It CAN be removed without this magical/mythical 3 pronged tool. Use a screwdriver and hammer but gently work around the ring in the clock positions: 12, 6, 9, 3. It worked for me on a 12 year old HDI when the lift pump failed.

When refitting clean the thread on the ring and tank very thoroughly and grease before reassembly taking note of the alignment/pip marks on the tank and lockring.

I found the same method of tightening as removal worked well i.e. working around the ring gently until its fully seated/lined up with the marks.

The lockring, if it gets broken, is about £12 and the seal (in reality a 5 or 6" O-ring) was about £6 from the stealer. The O ring can often be reused unless it has acquired a flat spot.

Someone on here made an unlocking tool from plywood a year or so ago that worked well without causing any damage to the lockring.

The problem with a C5 Alex is the Mk1 and Facelift C5 are both to my eyes butt ugly (sorry C5 owners :-D ) and from many accounts are rather boring and uninspiring to drive compared to a Xantia...

The "german styled" C5 X7 I do rather like the look of, however they're still too new for me to afford. I could see myself with one in a few years time though. None of the rest of the post Xantia Citroen range really interests me, so I'm going to cling to Xantia's for as long as I can, failing that jump ship to another marquee until the C5 X7 becomes affordable...
Hey :P not driven a Xantia so don't have that comparison, but my C5 certainly is the best car I've driven. I think the Mk1 is pretty smart looking aside from the estate which makes it look really ugly. The X7 is certainly the smartest looking one. The facelift is the ugliest of the three IMO.

Maybe because I'm suffering from a bit of rough running today and feeling distinctly down on power :)

As long as it's only intermittent, I'm sure you can sort it out :P

Hey if this car didn't keep changing its mind on what its symptoms were on a daily basis there wouldn't be half as many posts...
