Apart from turbo concerns (probably due to service interval spacing that Captain Kirk would be impressed by) are there any other known issues with this unit really ?
I'm aware some have a particle filter and some do not, I'm assuming they have a DMF (I note the 8v 1.4 does not) , assuming rubbery crank pulley too.
Aside from the 'shared' issue of injectors coaling up (1.4's do this too as far as I'm aware)
I'm really thinking if a 1.4 8v would be a better choice albeit its not very powerful, I know I'd not want a 16v 1.4 as that seems to be adding complexity for little gain compared to the 1.6. Then again 110 horses (or thereabouts) is a lot for a 1.6 engine never mind an oil burning unit.
The 1.4 seems more difficult to reach things too with the 'interesting' bits buried at the back.
Generic questions for my generic thoughts as it may be car shop shop time soon, not sure.

Re: Generic 1.6 16v HDi questions
Early 90 horse units didn't have a DPF - I suspect they probably do by now! All have DMFs(*), and vibration absorbing pulleys. It's a nice engine (turbo problems aside!) but it is built back to front which makes air and fuel filter (and glow plug) changes hard work on some cars - on a C4 car you have to remove the wipers and scuttle panel and insulation to get enough room to change the air filter FFS!!! Getting the turbo off is easy though compared to an XUD / HDi though Turbo problems common, but can be avoided by changing the oil regularly to the proper spec, and checking that the injectors are not loose. Some suffer nightmare electrical faults that cause limp mode - know of 2 people who have sold cars (1 C-max, 1 C4 Pic) because of this. Cam belt interval is 150k, but many need changing before that as they get noisy (ours is, but it's got no worse in the 15k we've had it). There is a chain which drives the second cam, and this can wear, eating its way though the cam carrier - which is then almost impossible to remove due to the injectors having to come out. Lighty had one in that did that to him on a cambelt change, he had to get someone in to remove the injectors, and fit a spare cam, and even then 2 of the injectors didn't survive the experience - I suspect that proper maintenance will avoid this though.
* clutch and DMF change reported horrible - there is a bolt that is fitted from the engine side, and to get to it you need to remove the DPF and exhuast. Citronut changed one on a 307, and is not keen on doing another. 4 part clutch kit is dear, so a clutch change is heading towards 4 figures unless you DIY (but see above re difficulty).

Re: Generic 1.6 16v HDi questions
Thanks.
I'm starting to think the extra "fun" of the 1.6 is too much trouble with regard to repairing it (at high expense in some cases) although I'd only tried one 1.4 HDi 206 a few years ago and it was exceedingly sluggish (and I don't drive fast either) to be fair it may of had a fault MAF or something. I recall someone saying the 1.4 (in a 206) felt about the same as the 2.0 at lower speeds but the only one I tried certainly did not.
I guess when its time I'll have to have a few test drives.

I was thinking about a Berlingo/dispatch with the 1.6hdi in but looking at the issues , no thanks .

Re: Generic 1.6 16v HDi questions
If I was after one of those I'd look for the 2.0 HDi (8 valve unit 90 or 110 if they fitted it, either will be fine) or the 1.4 Hdi 8v (not the 16v unit for the 1.4) simply as the complexity for little power gain ie 14 vs 16 = pointless.bxzx16v wrote:I was thinking about a Berlingo/dispatch with the 1.6hdi in but looking at the issues , no thanks .

Re: Generic 1.6 16v HDi questions
I used to have a 2.0Hdi 8 valve dispatch and that was great , ( I may even try to buy it back ) , I do genuinely prefer the 1.9 Jtd mulitjet in my fiat Doblo but it's got a DPF and I'm only doing short runs so it's doing it no good .

Re: Generic 1.6 16v HDi questions
I think I've just seen this while glancing through a BOL, it *appears* to be a bolt or more likely stud that has to come out (so cat off) so you can get the hex bolt out that is conveniently sat right next to it.RichardW wrote:* clutch and DMF change reported horrible - there is a bolt that is fitted from the engine side, and to get to it you need to remove the DPF and exhuast.
