Odd Xantia suspension behaviour.

Unread post by Gingerposer »

Couple of things to talk about and a wee moan cos I got a flat tyre today.
I have noticed since last week that when I turn right, there's a point where the steering seems to turn in more by itself. It doesn't do this to a great extent but it is noticeable and is a new behaviour. It doesn't do the same when turning left.
I went in past the garage I use in Aberdeen to book it in for this, and a check on a possible sticking rear height corrector, and harsh/poorly dampened rear suspension.
In the traffic queue on the way home the chap next to me alerted me to a flattish rear tyre. Pumped it up at a handy Shell station then checked the tyre at home - could see the head of a screw poking out of the middle of the tread - hoping this might be repairable.
I decided to change the wheel when I got home so set the suspension on high and went to get the axle stands, jack etc. Wasn't expecting the rear to rise as it has not been responding to Citrobics recently, however all four corners went up as expected. Boost!
Had a bit of a chore getting the spare out of the cradle under the car as the screw thing to lower the cradle had siezed - so I put a brick between spare tyre and the jack and managed to get enough slack in the cradle to lift it off the hook.
Changed the wheel, set the suspension to high again, tightened up the bolts then had to jack the car up to get it off the axle stands - for some reason the car hadn't gone as high as previously. Had a moment when I lowered the jack having removed the second axle stand - the car sank to the floor, trapping the jack. Odd thought I, so set the suspension to normal driving height for a few minutes, then to high again. Still no movement on that one corner (offside rear) after five minutes - until I decided to push down on the nearside rear, at which point the car rose to the high setting immediately.
Summary - odd suspension behaviour (I mean odder than we are used to) - any ideas what could be causing this?

Also, if anyone has a working rear height corrector for sale I'd be interested, would have to be sure I could get it here (Scotland) by Monday at the latest as the car goes in to the workshop on Tuesday at daft o'clock in the morning before I go to work.

Cheers

Sounds like a sticking height corrector linkage. I had similar symptoms on the rear suspension of mine until I lubricated the linkage thoroughly, although the height correction isn't as accurate as it should be the symptoms you describe went away.
